Roger Federer to play Stan Wawrinka in Indian Wells final

Roger Federer will take on fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka for the BNP Paribas Open title after both secured straight-sets wins in their semi-finals at Indian Wells.

Wawrinka, the world No 3, saw off Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 6-2 while Federer, whose quarter-final opponent Nick Kyrgios had pulled out because of illness, came through 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) against American Jack Sock.

Carreno Busta, seeded 21st, was put constantly under pressure by 31-year-old Wawrinka who swept through the opening set in 30 minutes.

Donald Trump: White House accidentally emails out satire piece to tout benefits of budget

The White House promotes a link to a Washington Post article titled Trump’s budget makes perfect sense and will fix America, and I will tell you why — the only problem being that the piece was satirical.

The White House’s new official email provides its readers with a daily dose of news from the Trump administration, from special events, to a “photo of the day”, to a curated selection of media reports.

On Friday, that selection included a link to a Washington Post article titled Trump’s Budget Makes Perfect Sense and Will Fix America, and I Will Tell You Why.

The only problem? It was satirical.

Written by columnist and humourist Alexandra Petri, the opinion piece — as it is labelled at the top of the article — mocks the Trump administration’s budget.

Mr Trump’s proposed budget has flagged massive cuts to the State Department, including UN funding and foreign aid, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as increased funding to the military and border security.

Petri poked fun at the “hard power budget” and likely cuts to humanitarian programs, publicly funded media and UN-funded initiatives.

One section read:

“This budget will make America a lean, mean fighting machine with bulging, rippling muscles and not an ounce of fat. America has been weak and soft for too long.

“BUT HOW WILL I SURVIVE ON THIS BUDGET? you may be wondering. I AM A HUMAN CHILD, NOT A COSTLY FIGHTER JET.

You may not survive, but that is because you are SOFT and WEAK, something this budget is designed to eliminate.”

Manufacturers will quit Australia if affordable, reliable energy cannot be guaranteed

The head of the Food and Grocery Council says manufacturers will quit Australia if affordable, reliable energy cannot be guaranteed.

The ageing brown-coal-fired generator in the Latrobe Valley will begin the staged shutdown of its eight units from March 27.

The final boiler will go cool on April 2.

With it will go 22 per cent of Victoria’s power supply and just over 5 per cent of the energy on a grid that runs from Port Douglas in far north Queensland to Port Lincoln on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula.

The wholesale price of power spiked across the National Electricity Market in November on news that Hazelwood would shut.

‘Unsophisticated and self-absorbed’: German press round on Trump after handshake refusal

Donald Trump is ‘an unsophisticated yet self-absorbed political neophyte’, according to sections of the German press – in comparison to ‘experienced’ Angela Merkel.

The two ‘could hardly be more contradictory’, according to reports of their ‘awkward’ meeting yesterday.

The US President refused to shake the German Chancellor’s hand, a moment which German newspapers have seized on to highlight the huge differences between the two.

Tabloid Bild carried a picture of the world leaders sitting awkwardly next to each other, while also pointing out how ‘unusual’ it was that Merkel found herself seated next to Trump’s daughter Ivanka – who has no official role in the administration.

Network of wealthy Russians has sunk $100m into Donald Trump’s luxury developments

gettyimages-653535260-0.jpgRussian buyers have spent nearly $100 million on Donald Trump’s luxury property developments, a new investigation has revealed. The US President has repeatedly insisted that he has no significant business interests in Russia, at a time when his ties to the country are under intense scrutiny.

He told a press conference last month: “I own nothing in Russia. I have no loans in Russia. I don’t have any deals in Russia.”

However, Reuters has found that as many as 63 people with Russian passports or addresses bought $98.4 million-worth of property in seven Trump luxury towers across America.

The real number of Russian investors may be higher, as many of the properties were purchased through ‘limited liability companies’, which allow the owner to conceal their identity.

Nearly a third of the 2044 units within the seven Trump residential towers are owned by limited liability companies

Trump says Germany owes US ‘vast sums of money for defence’

gettyimages-654461746-0-0.jpgPresident Donald Trump has said Germany owes the US “vast sums of money” for defending it.

He made the statement in a series of tweets on Saturday morning.

Mr Trump, after a video appeared to show him ignoring Ms Merkel’s request to shake hands at a photo opportunity, said: “Despite what you have heard from the FAKE NEWS, I had a GREAT meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“Nevertheless, Germany owes vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”

Champion mare Winx has made it 16 wins in a row, ploughing through a heavy track at Rosehill for an easy victory in the Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

Jockey Hugh Bowman ran Winx wide for much of the race, finally cruising to the lead at the 300m mark before powering home to win by at least six lengths over Le Romain with Chautauqua third.

“She’s just so special. I’m at a loss to explain it,” Bowman said.

Monopoly kicks out three classic game tokens

Chris Evans: Doesn’t care if speaking out against Trump stops people going to see his movies

  • Chris Evans is most famous for playing Captain America – but he’s also getting a reputation for fighting evil in the real world. Most notably he’s been taking down former KKK leader David Duke on Twitter.
  • But he’s also been generally very vocal on social media about speaking out against the Trump administration, and he’s not one to shy away from politics.Obviously, talking about these sorts of things in 2017 results in a certain amount of backlash. There are always going to be people who say actors should just stick to acting, and avoid politics.

But in a new profile in Esquire, Evans has revealed how much he was urged to keep silent – but felt he had to speak up.

He says that ‘advisors’ have told him to ditch the politics, because it could stop people from going to see his movies. But some things are more important.

Senior member of Trump’s Oklahoma campaign team charged with engaging in child prostitution

ralph-shortey.jpgA senior member of Donald Trump’s Oklahoma campaign team was booked on felony prostitution charges after police found him in a motel room with a teenage boy and drugs, court documents showed. Ralph Shortey, who campaigned as a champion of family values, was charged with three felony counts, including engaging in child prostitution.  The 35-year-old who has served as an Oklahoma Republican state senator since 2010, has not spoken to media about the incident.

According to an arrest affidavit, police found Shortey and a 17-year-old male, who was not named, in a motel room in Moore, south of Oklahoma City, on March 9.

“Officers present observed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the room and inside the room at the time of their contact with the defendant,” the affidavit said, adding the officers also “found an opened box of condoms in the defendant’s backpack.”

According to court records filed in Cleveland County, Shortey was booked at a local jail. His bond has been set at $100,000 (£81,000) and local media said he was released about two after he surrendered.

Trump: Reverse cuts to arts, poor/elderly if he stopped staying at Mar-a-Lago, figures show

mar-a-lago.jpgDonald Trump could reverse his recently announced cuts to arts, poor and elderly services if he cut his trips to Mar-a-Lago and lived permanently in White House instead, figures indicate.

Calculations show four programmes that face elimination – which tackle homelessness, unemployment among over-55s, participation in the arts and helping the poor access higher education – could be maintained at the cost of the President’s trips to his private Florida resort over the course of four years.

The services amount to a total of $597 million — just less than the $600 million security arrangements for the Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago visits are estimated to cost the taxpayer over the course of his term…

Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Roger Federer clash at Indian Wells due to illness

Nick Kyrgios withdraws from his quarter-final match at Indian Wells against Swiss star Roger Federer, due to sickness.

Kyrgios says he believes he has food poisoning.

The controversial 21-year-old added on social media that he needs to be at his best to play Federer, and didn’t take the decision lightly.

“At this stage we think it’s food poisoning, and I’m praying it’s nothing more,” he said.

“After a restless night of being sick I have nothing left and to play a great champion like Roger, I need to be at my best to have a chance.

“These are the matches we train for but I’m in no fit state to take to the court.

Commonwealth Games could be held in Perth in 2022, WA Minister suggests after Durban dumped

Commonwealth Games could be held in Perth in 2022, WA Minister suggests after Durban dumped

Western Australia’s new Sports Minister Mick Murray believes it would be a good idea for Perth to step in and bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but admits the state’s dire finances may not allow it.

Durban was this week stripped of the right to stage the 2022 Games after missing deadlines and financial problems.

Melbourne, which hosted the Games in 2006, has expressed an interest in stepping in as a replacement, as have the English cities of Birmingham and Liverpool.

The Gold Coast has also said it would be prepared to come to the rescue and hold the Commonwealth Games twice in a row if asked.
