Mining magnate Andrew Forrest pledges support for Force survival; Australian Rugby Union

IF the Australian Rugby Union want to kill the Western Force, they are going to have to defeat the riches of mining magnate Andrew Forrest first.

The Force’s bid for survival received a massive boost on Saturday when Forrest pledged to do everything within his powers to help the Perth-based franchise avoid the chop.

Forrest, the chairman of Fortescue Metals, is valued at $4.5 billion according to Forbes.

And he has a history of bankrolling causes close to his heart.

Earlier this year, Forrest revealed he would donate $400 million to charity.

Now, the Australian philanthropist has added ‘saving the Force’ to his to-do list.

The ARU will axe either the Rebels or Force ahead of next season.

Rebels owner Andrew Cox has previously stated he won’t sell the licence if it means it will be immediately closed down.

But with Cox losing millions, rumours are circulating he is still in negotiations with the ARU about selling the licence back.

Perth petrol prices: Fill up for as little as 90c a litre tomorrow [Mon]

PERTH petrol prices have dropped below $1 a litre for the first time since October — and bargain hunters can fill up for as little as 90¢ a litre tomorrow.

The budget savings at the bowser are likely to continue, experts say, as international wholesale petrol prices nudge downwards and Perth petrol stations wage a price war.

Fuel Watch data shows Perth’s cheapest unleaded petrol hit a low of 97.9¢ a litre this week — the first time it has gone below $1 a litre in nine months, when it bottomed out at 90.1¢ a litre.

With discount coupons and shopping dockets that can offer as much as 8¢ a litre off, savvy commuters can fill up for less than 90¢ a litre tomorrow, with Monday the cheapest day of the week at many stations.

But the weekly price cycle means big differences in cost depending on the day you fill up, with the average unleaded fuel price for July $1.19 a litre and the highest price almost $1.36 a litre.

Indigenous artist Peter Mungkuri wins Hadley’s Art Prize, world’s richest landscape prize

An Indigenous artist has won what is believed to be the world’s richest landscape art prize for a drawing of his remote South Australian birthplace.

Peter Mungkuri has won the $100,000 inaugural Hadley’s Art Prize for his depiction of the Aboriginal community of Fregon (Kaltjiti).

Mungkuri said his piece, titled Ngura Wiru or Good Country, told a personal story.

“This is my story about that creek at Fregon,” he said. “I was born there.”

“Back then we lived in the bush, slept in the warm sand and we lived on the bush tucker.

“That place is where it all started, that was my home.

“I love this country, it has watched us Anangu (people) for many years. It is a wise country.”

Mungkuri’s ink on Somerset-paper drawing was chosen by a judging panel of three national art specialists, Lisa Slade, Rodger Butler and Julie Gough.

6 months in, Trump has the lowest six-month approval rating of any president

Donald Trump has the lowest six-month approval rating of any president.

Americans give President Donald Trump the lowest six-month approval rating of any president in polls dating back 70 years, punctuated by questions about his competence on the world stage, his effectiveness, the GOP health care plan and Russia’s role in the 2016 election.

Just 36 percent of Americans polled in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll approve of Trump’s job performance, down 6 points from his 100-day mark, itself a low. The previous president closest to this level at or near six months was Gerald Ford, at 39 percent, in February 1975.

Makarova and Vesnina cruise to women’s Wimbledon doubles title

Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won the Wimbledon women’s doubles title for the first time on Saturday with a crushing 6-0 6-0 victory over the pairing of Taiwan’s Hao-Ching Chan and Romanian Monica Niculescu.

The second-seeded Russian pair have now won three of the grand slam events in doubles following their triumph at the French Open in 2013 and the U.S. Open a year later.

The final lasted 54 minutes and the Russians, runners-up at the All England Club in 2015, had to save just two break points in the entire match against the pairing playing in their first season together.

The top-seeded duo of American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Czech Lucie Safarova had to withdraw before the second round after Mattek-Sands suffered a severe injury in a singles match.

2 Stuck trains at Penn Station strand 700, rescue train also stalls

The so far, so good Summer of Hell at Penn Station hit a major road bump Saturday when two trains lost power, stranding more than 700 riders — and one of the rescue trains sent to help also stalled.

Amtrak authorities said electrical issues with overhead wires were to blame for the latest woes at the beleaguered transit hub.

The trouble began when a train from Miami carrying 165 people stalled as it entered Penn Station about 11:50 a.m. A rescue train sent to tow that train into the station proved no help when it was stopped in its tracks by the same electrical problems.

“This seems to be an electrical issue,” an Amtrak spokesman said. “The train became disabled just west of the station.”

When the first rescue train couldn’t reach the stalled train, a second locomotive was sent in and towed everyone to safety after about two hours...

Australia beat South Africa by 59 runs: Women’s World Cup – as it happened

Australia were just too strong for South Africa and set up a semi-final against India, who thrashed New Zealand, in Derby on Thursday.

This seems as good a time as any for me to bid you farewell. Australia were just two good there, too clinical for South Africa, who face England now. Can’t escape the sense that the final will be between England and Australia, which really would be great fun. There will be reports on the site shortly no doubt, and I will be back on Tuesday with Vish Ehantharajah for England’s semi-final with South Africa. Until then! Have a great weekend…

AFL sex scandal: Revelations “Top 10” list complied about female colleagues

Reports this morning have raised the lid on a toxic sexist culture within AFL headquarters with revelations some men in the office had come up with a “Top 10” list of female colleagues they wanted to bed.

The Herald Sun reports a female employee was told that she was in fact on the list of a list put together by a number of male staff at AFL house.

The woman confirmed that she was told that she was “number five on the list.”

Despite these allegations, AFL CEO Gillon Mclachlan yesterday said the two sacked executives, Simon Lethlean and David Simkiss, would probably be welcomed back into the game in the near future…

Froome regains control as Matthews wins stage 14 of Tour de France

RODEZ, France (Reuters) – Chris Froome reclaimed the overall lead on the Tour de France after he left Italian Fabio Aru trailing in a punchy finish of the 14th stage, a 181.5-km ride from Blagnac on Saturday.

The defending champion came seventh, one second behind stage winner Michael Matthews of Australia as Aru, who started the day with the yellow jersey on his shoulders, lost 25 seconds to the Briton in the final effort, a 600-metre climb at an average gradient of 9.6 per cent.

Aru was out of position in the run-in to the climb and as he crossed the line his face wore a mask of pain after more than four hours on the saddle battling strong winds.

Overall, Briton Froome now leads Aru by 18 seconds and last year’s runner-up Romain Bardet by 23 seconds after the Frenchman finished five seconds off the pace…

Thousands of Illinois homes swamped by flood waters as rivers keep rising

(Reuters) – Flooding north of Chicago could worsen on Saturday as rivers keep rising after a deluge earlier this week that damaged thousands of homes and sent water cascading into streets and basements, officials said.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner on Friday issued a disaster proclamation for Lake, McHenry and Kane counties and pledged the support of the state government to people whose properties were damaged or destroyed.

Thousands of homes were affected by flooding after storms dumped more than 7 inches (18 cm) of rain in the area on Tuesday and Wednesday, said Patti Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

The full extent of damage was still unknown, but houses had their basements inundated and some structures may have suffered worse, Thompson said. No injuries or deaths have been reported.

“Until the water goes down, it’s hard to get a firm number,” Thompson said by phone. “We still have a few more days when we’re going to see levels rising in some of these areas.”
