Battle for Mosul: Destruction of al-Nuri mosque ‘shows IS defeated’
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi says the destruction of an ancient mosque in the city of Mosul is “an official declaration of defeat” by so-called Islamic State (IS).
Iraqi forces say IS blew up the Great Mosque of al-Nuri and its famous leaning minaret as jihadists battled to stop advancing pro-government troops.
IS said American aircraft had destroyed the complex, a claim denied by the US.
Aerial photographs show the complex largely destroyed.
The mosque, which was more than 800 years old, was where in July 2014 IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi commanded allegiance in his first and only public appearance following IS’ declaration days earlier of a “caliphate”.
The mosque’s destruction has brought widespread condemnation.
A senior US commander in Iraq said IS had destroyed “one of Mosul and Iraq’s great treasures”.
“This is a crime against the people of Mosul and all of Iraq, and is an example of why this brutal organisation must be annihilated,” Maj Gen Joseph Martin said.

Lewis Hamilton fastest in #F1 practice in Australia
The new Formula One season roared back into action on Friday and there was an all-too familiar name at the top of the order after Lewis Hamilton completed an ominous practice double for the Australian Grand Prix.
Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel exchanged verbal volleys in Melbourne on Thursday as they failed to agree on which driver-team combination should be considered the favourites heading into a new era of Formula One following changes to the sport’s technical regulations.
The consensus in the paddock was that Ferrari, led by four-time champion Vettel and starved of championship glory for more than a decade, held the advantage following a promising eight days of pre-season testing in Barcelona. But Hamilton’s blistering pace here round Albert Park would appear to point to the contrary.

Chris Evans: Doesn’t care if speaking out against Trump stops people going to see his movies
Chris Evans is most famous for playing Captain America – but he’s also getting a reputation for fighting evil in the real world. Most notably he’s been taking down former KKK leader David Duke on Twitter.
- But he’s also been generally very vocal on social media about speaking out against the Trump administration, and he’s not one to shy away from politics.Obviously, talking about these sorts of things in 2017 results in a certain amount of backlash. There are always going to be people who say actors should just stick to acting, and avoid politics.
But in a new profile in Esquire, Evans has revealed how much he was urged to keep silent – but felt he had to speak up.
He says that ‘advisors’ have told him to ditch the politics, because it could stop people from going to see his movies. But some things are more important.

Is this where Trump got his Obama wire tap conspiracy theory?
Never a dull moment in Donald Trump’s presidency. He seems to have woken up angry, as per usual and this time the source of his ire isn’t Saturday Night Live or the New York Times. It’s his predecessor, Barack Obama. In true tirade-fashion, Trump launched into an attack against the former president, accusing him of wiretapping his New York headquarter ahead of the presidential election in November.
Member of Congress Ted Lieu also painstakingly pointed out that if there was a wiretap on Trump tower, it means a “federal judge found probable cause”.
For his critics, the lack of proof for such accusations seems to be the modus operandi for the US president.
Where did he find this piece of ‘information’?
We think we have the answer.
It may all boil down to a Breitbart News article.
