Citizenship scandal to hit five Labor MPs
Labor could be the next to feel the heat, with the government reportedly prepared to challenge the election of MPs they believe may not have been properly elected.
The coalition appears willing to use its numbers to challenge Labor MPs Justine Keay, Susan Lamb, Brendan O’Connor, Maria Vamvakinou and Tony Zappia on the grounds they’ve not done enough to end doubts over their citizenship, The Australian reports.
In an interview Tuesday morning, Attorney-General George Brandis accused Opposition Leader Bill Shorten of “not being honest” when it came to members of his own party whose citizenship was in question.
“Nobody can criticise the government for concealing any inconvenient facts,” Mr Brandis said.
“Mr Shorten is trying to hide behind ignorance in order to conceal the fact that some of his members may have the same difficulty.”

Flight attendant shows kindness to widower on flight with a seat for ashes; Gone Viral
The beautiful story has been doing the rounds on Twitter in Japan after it was published in local press.
Following the death of his wife of more than 50 years, a Japanese man was transporting his wife’s ashes back to their hometown, according to the story as translated on Japan’s SoraNews24 site.
Carrying his wife’s ashes in a large bag, the widower asked at the check-in counter to make sure it was OK to take on the plane.
So far, so good. He boarded the plane, put the bag into the overhead locker and sat down.
Enter our hero flight attendant, who – having apparently been tipped off by the check-in staff – approached the man and said: “The seat next to you is empty. Would your travelling companion like to sit down?”
The flight attendant took the bag down for him, put it in the seat beside him, placing the seatbelt on, and brought refreshments for both “passengers” during the flight.
“We were able to have a final trip together, just the two of us,” the man told the newspaper.
Unsurprisingly, the story has clocked up thousands of likes, shares and comments praising the airline and flight attendant’s caring response to the man’s difficult journey – with many saying it brought tears to their eyes.

Russian Ambassador Said He Discussed Trump Campaign With Jeff Sessions
U.S. intelligence agencies intercepted a conversation in which Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak claimed he had discussed President Donald Trump’s campaign and policy positions with then-Sen. Jeff Sessions during the 2016 election campaign, The Washington Post reported Friday.
The intercepted conversations suggest Kislyak and Sessions, now Trump’s attorney general, had “substantive” conversations about Trump’s position on Russia, and how he saw his relationship with the country’s government should he win the election, according to the Post report.
U.S. officials told the Post they had no way to verify if Kislyak was accurately recounting his conversations with Sessions.
The Justice Department didn’t immediately return HuffPost’s request for comment.
Sessions met Kislyak at least two times in 2016: once at the Republican National Convention in July, and once at his Senate office in September. A third meeting, during a reception the Mayflower hotel in Washington, has also been reported, but Sessions has denied having private meetings at that reception.
“If any brief interaction occurred in passing with the Russian ambassador during that reception, I do not remember it,” Sessions said during testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee in June.
Sessions did not disclose any of those meetings on his security clearance forms, and during his confirmation hearing denied any “communications with the Russians.” The meetings were only publicly disclosed following a CNN report in May.

Thomas Cook: passengers flee as aircraft fills with smoke in Egypt; CLIP
AT least two people were injured as holidaymakers frantically evacuated a Thomas Cook plane in Egypt after smoke filled the cabin.
The Sun reports passengers on a flight heading from the Red Sea resort Hurghada to London Gatwick had to be evacuated using emergency slides just moments before take-off after smoke began coming from underneath a passenger’s seat.
It comes just days after a knifeman stabbed two female tourists to death in a beach rampage at the popular resort Hurghada.
Two German women were killed and four injured in the terrifying attack on Friday.
Thomas Cook said the smoke on board the plane was caused by a mechanical issue and was not terror-related.
The airline said all 251 passengers and nine crew on board Flight MT519 made it off the plane in a “controlled evacuation”.
But Twitter users said it was more like an “emergency” and said people were injured as they rushed to exit the Boeing 757-300 last night.

Huge California wildfire spreads overnight as crews dig in
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Firefighters battled on Saturday to gain control of a destructive wildfire burning near Santa Barbara, California that mushroomed in size overnight, pushed by gusty offshore winds into dry brush that has not burned in decades.
The Whittier Fire, which broke out July 8 and has already destroyed eight homes, had been more than 50 percent contained on Friday before so-called “Sundowner” winds picked up in the evening, according to a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) website.
Nearly 3,000 people who were forced to flee their homes near Cachuma Lake and the community of Goleta remained under evacuation orders as fire officials said another evening of Sundowners could drive the flames toward populated areas.
“The fire continues burning in an area above the community of Goleta and crews continue to build containment and contingency lines to hold the fire in check,” Cal Fire said on the Inciweb fire-tracking website. “The east and west flanks of the fire continue to burn towards established containment lines.”
More than 1,600 firefighters were working the blaze, assisted by water-dropping planes and helicopters. Highway 154 was shut down in both directions and the Los Padres National Park was closed to the public. Evacuation shelters were opened at a high school in Goleta.

Contractor charged with leaking classified NSA info on Russian hacking
(CNN)The Justice Department announced charges Monday against a federal contractor with Top Secret security clearance, after she allegedly leaked classified information to an online media outlet.
Reality Leigh Winner, 25, a contractor with Pluribus International Corporation in Georgia, is accused of “removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet,” according to a federal complaint.
CNN is told by sources that the document Winner allegedly leaked is the same one used as the basis for the article published Monday by The Intercept, detailing a classified National Security Agency memo. The NSA report, dated May 5, provides details of a 2016 Russian military intelligence cyberattack on a US voting software supplier, though there is no evidence that any votes were affected by the hack.
A US official confirmed to CNN that The Intercept’s document is a genuine, classified NSA document.

North Korea test-fires another missile
North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile Monday morning that landed in the ocean, the US military said.
South Korea and Japan immediately protested the missile launch, the most recent test-firing by North Korea as it seeks to develop nuclear weapons that can reach US military bases.
The missile was fired at 5:39 a.m. local time (4:39 p.m. Sunday ET) from an area near Wonsan, Kangwon province, toward the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula, according to a statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The missile was “assumed” to be one of the SCUD series, the statement said.
“It flew about 450 kilometers,” the statement said. “South Korea and the United States are currently closely analyzing for additional information. Our military is closely monitoring North Korean military and maintaining readiness posture.”

Another video showing Western backed White Helmets assisting public executions in ‘rebel-held’ Syria
Syria Civil Defense, popularly known as the White Helmets, can be seen in a new video assisting in a public execution in a rebel-held town in Syria. It is at least the second such execution video featuring members of the Nobel Prize-nominated group.
The White Helmets have received at least $23 million in funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), a wing of the State Department. The British Foreign Office and other European governments have pitched in as well.
Frequently cited as an invaluable source of information by major Western media outlets, the group was the subject of an Academy Award-winning 2016 Netflix documentary, The White Helmets.
Endorsements from A-list Hollywood celebrities like George Clooney and Justin Timberlake, as well as Hillary Clinton and British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, have followed.

BREAKING: Plane with engine problems lands at Perth Airport
BREAKING: AN aircraft suffering engine problems is believed to have made an emergency landing at Perth Airport.
Emergency crews were called to the airport about 6.55am after reports a plane with engine problems was due to land.
The plane, a Skippers Aviation aircraft, was carrying 50 passengers.
A Perth Airport spokeswoman said the plane had returned to the airport about 15 minutes after taking off.
The aircraft landed safely.

Cory Bernardi’s Australian Conservatives to amalgamate with Family First
The Australian Conservatives party, represented in the Senate by Cory Bernardi, will amalgamate with the Family First Party, the ABC understands.
Key points:

Family First has two representatives in the South Australian Parliament who will become Australian Conservatives instead.
But the ABC understands newly elected federal Family First senator Lucy Gichuhi will not be part of the merged party and is expected to issue a statement about the developments today.
Senator Gichuhi, who was confirmed just last week by the High Court as the Family First senator for South Australia to replace Bob Day, highlighted her allegiance to Family First.
“Family First is a party that shares my values and my hope for Australia and I am proud to be a member of that team,” she told reporters in Adelaide.
The decision to amalgamate the two parties means a significant consolidation of the conservative movement nationally.
It is understood to have been ratified by executives from Family First, who have resolved not to keep the party going at state or federal level and to instead join with Senator Bernardi’s new party.
When Family First is wound up, the party’s resources will go to the Australian Conservatives.
Senator Bernardi is the leader of the Australian Conservatives and its sole representative in federal parliament.

#F1 order Lewis Hamilton to scrap video clip
Liberty have encouraged drivers to reach out to fans by posting behind-the-scenes selfies and videos online, with Hamilton one of the keenest to comply.
But footage of his pole lap in China nine days ago was deemed unacceptable by Liberty because on-track action is the preserve of official broadcasters.
Sportsmail understands that Liberty representatives spoke to Mercedes and members of Hamilton’s personal management team to ask they remove it from his Instagram account. Hamilton immediately agreed to the request.
Liberty said: ‘Formula One has issued a new set of social media guidelines allowing teams and drivers to film and record their activities to bring the sport closer to the fans.
‘However, F1 does not want drivers posting ‘international feed footage’ as this has been licensed to broadcaster partners, in many cases exclusively.
‘Whenever a mistake is made, teams and drivers are asked to take down any relevant footage.’
