Australia records hottest July, Bureau of Meteorology says

A BOM report released today shows the country’s average July temperature was at its highest in more than 100 years of weather recording.

A BOM report released today shows the country’s average July temperature was at its highest in more than 100 years of weather recording.

BOM forecaster David Crock said the warmest parts had been through Queensland, the Northern Territory, northern Western Australia and New South Wales.

Mackay, in central Queensland, had its hottest July day on record at 28.9C on July 19, beating the previous record set only the year before.

“The month has been dominated — at least in eastern Australia — by a ridge of high pressure which has seen very clear skies and a warm air mass sit over the country for days and weeks at a time,” he said.

Car bombs in Damascus kill seven

Three car bombs have exploded in Damascus with seven people killed in one of the blasts – the biggest such attack in the Syrian capital since a series of suicide attacks in March.

One of the suicide bombers blew himself up in Tahrir square in central Damascus after being encircled by the authorities. A police officer at the scene said seven people were killed and 13 wounded in that attack.

The other two car bombs were destroyed by the authorities, state media said.

State TV said the casualty toll had been minimised because the security forces had prevented ‘the terrorists from reaching their targets’, saying they had aimed to target busy areas on the first day back to work after the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Footage broadcast by state TV from Tahrir Square showed roads scattered with debris, several badly damaged cars, and another one that had been turned into a pile of twisted metal.

Footage broadcast another of the blast sites showed what appeared to be the remains of a person and badly damaged vehicles outside a mosque in the Baytara traffic circle near the Old City.

In March, two suicide bomb attacks in Damascus killed several dozen people, most of them at the Palace of Justice courthouse near the Old City. Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack.

Syrian government forces, which have defeated rebel fighters in several suburbs of Damascus over the last year, are currently battling insurgents in the Jobar and Ain Tarma areas on the capital’s eastern outskirts.

Panama ditches Taiwan in favor of Beijing

Taiwan has expressed “deep anger and regret” after losing one of its few diplomatic allies, deepening the island’s international

China announced Tuesday that it had established ties with Panama after the central American country signed a joint communique and stressed it would not maintain any official ties with Taiwan.
“It yielded to Beijing because of economic benefits, did a diplomatic turn in a very unfriendly way and deceived the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) until the last minute,” David Lee, Taiwan’s foreign minister said.
He said Taiwan was also cutting its diplomatic ties with Panama to “safeguard” the “nation’s sovereignty and dignity.”

Seb Bourdais crash: Ex-F1 driver suffers fractured pelvis/hip in Indy 500 qualifying accident

sebastien-bourdais-ap.jpgFour-time Champ Car champion and ex-Formula One driver Sebastien Bourdais suffered a fractured pelvis and hip in a frightening crash during qualifying for the Indy 500, in which he lost control of his career and hit the outside wall at over 230mph before flipping over and catching fire.

Bourdais was lucky to escape without life-threatening injuries in the accident, which happened on the third of his four qualifying laps as he negotiated turn two. The Frenchman was extracted from his Dale Coyne Raching cockpit and transported to hospital where his injuries were diagnosed, and he underwent surgery on Saturday night.

However, Bourdais did not lose consciousness during the accident.

An IndyCar statement read: “Verizon IndyCar Series driver Sebastien Bourdais was diagnosed with multiple fractures to his pelvis and a fracture to his right hip following an incident today while attempting to qualify for the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.

“According to IndyCar Medical Director Dr Geoffrey Billows, Bourdais will undergo surgery on his pelvis this evening at IU Health Methodist Hospital.”

Team owner, Dale Coyne, added: “Sebastien is in good hands here at IU Methodist Hospital with the staff and now we just wait for him to recover.”

Bourdais is one of the most successful ever drivers in American racing, having won four Champ Car series titles between 2004 and 2007, before switching to Formula One in 2008 for a two-year stint with Toro Rosso.

The 38-year-old has also been a regular at the Le Mans 24 Hours, having first competed in the French race in 1999, and he has a best overall finish of second three times in 2007, 2009 and 2011 with the factory-backed Peugeot team. More recently, Bourdais has competed around his hometown track of Le Mans with the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing USA team.

Chris Cornell: Audioslave and Soundgarden singer dies aged 52

He was best known as the lead singer in Soundgarden and Audioslave, and also performed the theme song to the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale.

In a statement, Cornell’s representative Brian Bumbery said his death was “sudden and unexpected”.

Chris CornellIt also said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Cornell died shortly after playing a concert with Soundgarden in Detroit on Wednesday evening.

The show was part of a wider tour and the group had a number of live dates scheduled for later this month.

As a solo artist, he released four studio albums – most recently 2015’s Higher Truth.

His biggest single in the UK was 2006’s You Know My Name, which was the theme song to Casino Royale, which starred Daniel Craig.

The track made him the first male American artist to write and perform the theme song for a James Bond movie.

But he was perhaps most famous as the lead singer of Seattle band Soundgarden, which formed in 1984 and went on to release six studio albums.

Their most successful in the UK was 1994’s Superunknown, which reached number four in the singles chart.

In 2001, he joined rock supergroup Audioslave, which consisted of Cornell on lead vocals, together with Rage Against The Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk (drums). The group disbanded in 2007.

Cyclone Debbie: Logan flooding now worse than 1974, body found in waters

Flooding in Logan brought on by ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie is the worst in the city’s history, Mayor Luke Smith says, with more than 250 homes expected to be inundated.

The body of a 77-year-old man has been pulled from floodwaters at Eagleby, south of Brisbane.

He was found by emergency crews about 3:50pm not far from where he was seen last seen on Friday at Eagleby Road.

It comes at Logan Mayor Luke Smith declares flooding in the area, brought on by ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie, as the worst in the area’s history.

Residents in some low-lying parts of the city, south of Brisbane, were told to consider leaving their homes today as flooding continued.

Thousands fled some areas in Logan, Beaudesert and the northern Gold Coast on Friday as the Albert and Logan rivers rose and inundated homes and businesses.

Today Cr Smith said 250 homes across Logan would experience inundation, but the severity would not be known until the Logan River receded.

“Logan has experienced the worst flooding it has ever experienced in the history of our city,” Cr Smith said.

“This is higher than 1974 and it’s more of an impact right across our city than we’ve ever seen.
