Earthquake magnitude of 6.4 strikes off Indonesia coast

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of southern Sumatra in Indonesia, causing panicked residents to run from their homes but no major damage.

The US Geological Survey said the quake on Sunday morning had a magnitude of 6.4 and occurred at a depth of 35km.

It was centered 74km west of the coastal city of Bengkulu and also felt in Singapore, about 590km from the epicenter. It did not generate a tsunami.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the quake was felt for about 10 seconds in coastal cities and was strong enough to shake belongings from shelves and topple furniture.

Residents ran from their homes and there were power outages in some areas but no reports of casualties or structural damage to buildings, Nugroho said.

‘The intensity of the earthquake felt mild to moderate,’ he said.

Sally Pearson trumps Cathy Freeman as greatest Aussie track athlete of the modern era

NEW world champion Sally Pearson has gone past Sydney Olympic queen  Freeman as the most prolific track athlete of the modern era.

GOLDEN PERFORMANCE: Pearson crowned world champion

BOLT SHOCKER: Legend collapses during farewell race

DOMINANCE: How Sally took down world record-holder

Pearson’s extraordinary comeback to claim her second world 100m hurdles title in London has sealed her place in Australian sporting folklore.

The 30-year-old missed the past two years because of injury and took the unusual step of coaching herself last year.

While Freeman’s legendary status remains unchallenged, Pearson can now lay claim to having a better record at global championships.

The hurdler’s three major titles came at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2011 and 2017 world championships.

Freeman’s three 400m titles were at the Sydney Olympics and the 1997 and 1999 world championships…

But Pearson has also won two major silver medals, while Freeman only has the one.

Australian head coach Craig Hilliard said Pearson deserves her place among the greats.

“That’s one of the greatest comebacks in Australian history,” he said.

“It’s unbelievable. I don’t get emotional that often but you couldn’t help getting emotional in that with just the whole build-up and what she’s done in the last few weeks…

‘It’s a massacre’: At least 30 children die in Indian hospital after oxygen is cut off

Frantic parents tried to resuscitate their children as the supply ran out in an unpaid bill dispute.

One by one, the infants and children slipped away Thursday night, their parents watching helplessly as oxygen supplies at the government hospital ran dangerously low.

At least 30 children died Thursday and into Friday at a hospital in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh after its supply of liquid oxygen was disrupted over an unpaid bill, officials said. A Home Ministry spokesman told the Press Trust of India, citing police reports, that 21 of the deaths were directly linked to a shortage of oxygen.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. as medical practitioners and relatives — the tanks running dry — handed out manual resuscitator bags to families in a desperate attempt to save the young patients.

“We saw children dying around us,” said the father of one victim, who gave his name only as Vijay. “Obviously, it’s the hospital’s fault. So many children have died because of them. My son was fine until nighttime, then something wrong happened.”

Two more children died Saturday at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital in Gorakhpur, an impoverished area in the eastern part of the state, as authorities scrambled to firm up supplementary supplies and investigate the tragedy. The government suspended the medical college principal Saturday.

The state’s health minister and hospital officials have denied charges that the deaths were caused by the oxygen bill dispute. An estimated 60 children have died at the hospital since Aug. 7 from a variety of causes, officials said.

In a news conference Saturday, the state’s chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, called the tragedy despicable and said the state had set up a committee to investigate the role of the oxygen vendor.

“The guilty will not be spared,” Adityanath said.

Parents of the victims described feelings of anger and bewilderment over the incident, saying they were struggling with guilt over not being able to save their children…

Bledisloe Cup, Western Force: McGowan will scrap $4 million payment to Australian Rugby Union

PREMIER Mark McGowan has exacted swift revenge on the Australian Rugby Union for its decision to axe the Western Force by scrapping a deal to bring forward a $4 million payment to stage the Bledisloe Cup at Perth Stadium.

While the blockbuster match between the Wallabies and All Blacks will still go-ahead in Perth in 2019, the WA Government is no longer willing to agree to the cash-strapped ARU’s request to make early payments.

Mr McGowan earlier this year agreed to the request on the proviso the Force’s future in the Super Rugby competition was guaranteed.

On Friday, WA’s rugby union community was devastated when the ARU announced it would cut the Perth-based team from the 2018 season and keep the Melbourne Rebels instead.

The WA Government is paying the ARU $5 million to stage Perth’s first Bledisloe Cup match. The former Barnett government late last year handed over the first $1 million, but the ARU will now have to wait another two years to get its hands on the remainder.

“The offer is definitely off the table now,” Mr McGowan said. “There is no way the ARU will be getting those payments earlier than originally planned. The deal is off.”

Mr McGowan also revealed the Government was re-visiting commitments made to WA several years ago by the ARU when the State agreed to pour millions into rugby in WA, including a $95 million upgrade to nib Stadium…

Qantas, Virgin: Kimberley region says airlines are holding regional towns to ransom

AIRLINES are “crippling” WA’s regional towns and cities with blatant gouging on ticket prices, a Government inquiry into high airfares will be told.

Premier Mark McGowan announced the inquiry, to be led by the Economics and Industry Standing Committee, examining regional airfares and their impact on communities, businesses and tourism.

A not-yet-public submission, obtained by The Sunday Times, from the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry, slams the airlines and accuses them of holding the Kimberley tourism town to ransom.

“Broome recently experienced an extreme case where there were no seats available on any flight from Broome to Perth for five consecutive days … the cheapest option to fly on Sunday, July 15, being $5861 to fly via Melbourne,” the submission from chamber chief executive Jael Napper said.

“It’s the firm belief of the Broome Chamber that the reason for the unusually high airfares is lack of competition on the route. Qantas and Virgin are in a comfort zone where there is no threat of disruption.

Tourist finds a nest of giant spiders on a wooden stake at a vineyard in Melbourne

A TOURIST visiting a vineyard in Victoria has made the frightful discovery of giant nest of huntsman spiders on a wooden stake.

The image, taken at the Yarra Valley, 90 kilometres east of Melbourne, shows at least ten of the venomous spiders bunched up together on the wood.

After being shared on Reddit, the image inspired people to share their Huntsman horror stories.

“Worked on a horse stud in that area, one day on the farm I had to move 8 sheets of 3/4 plywood from one shack to another. It was a two person lift, so grab a mate and we move the first sheet. My mate turns around and his back is covered in grey huntsmans as big as dinner plates, so I brush them off,” one commenter said.

“There was also the time where I tried to squish one with a broom on a fairly high ceiling. The bristles ended up just giving it a massage till it fell behind the couch,” added another…

Canadian pastor imprisoned for more than 2 years in North Korea arrived back home in Canada

A Canadian pastor who was imprisoned for more than two years in North Korea arrived back home Saturday.

Hyeon Soo Lim was serving a life sentence of hard labor in North Korea for alleged anti-state activities, but was released last week on what the North Korean government described as sick bail.

His son, James Lim, said it was surreal to see him again after living in fear over what might happen to him.

James Lim said his dad was extremely grateful to the Canadian government. He said his father was resting at home and looked forward to going to his church’s Sunday service and meeting with the community after so long.

“Now more than ever, he’s never felt more Canadian,” the son said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent national security adviser Daniel Jean to North Korea to seek Lim’s freedom…

Multicultural group of students makes the semi-finals of WA schools debating competition

Wearing tracksuit pants and polo shirts, a group of students with English as a second language take on elite school students in their suits and ties — and win.

A multicultural group of students is surpassing expectations after making the semi-finals of Western Australia’s schools debating competition.

A number of the students joined the team to improve their English skills, never expecting such success.

One of them, Asmaa Hameed, understood only a few words of English when her family moved from Iraq to Perth.

Two years later, she has transformed her basic vocabulary into a set of language skills that has her winning debates.

Asmaa, 13, said she joined the Greenwood College debating team to improve her English…

Aussie Comeback queen Pearson roars to world 100m hurdles gold

Australia’s Sally Pearson completed one of the great sporting comebacks when she overcame two years of injury agony to win the world 100 meters hurdles title at the age of 30 on Saturday.

Pearson, world champion in 2011 and Olympic gold medalist in London in 2012 and with Olympic and world silvers to her name, held off Dawn Harper Nelson, one of four Americans in the field, for an emotional triumph.

She missed the last two seasons due to hamstring and Achilles injuries and a badly broken wrist and feared for her career. But when she clocked 12.48 seconds in the London Diamond League last month – her fastest time for five years – she realized she was in medal-contending form.

She then underlined that by reaching the final as the fastest qualifier in 12.53 on Friday…

Kenya: Post-election unrest leaves at least eleven people dead

Kenyan police have killed at least 11 people in a crackdown on protests, as anger over the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta erupted, officials say.

However, the NASA opposition coalition, led by four-time presidential hopeful Raila Odinga, put the death toll at more than 100, including 10 children, but did not provide evidence.

Mr Odinga has rejected the poll and its result as “massive” fraud.

The eruption of violence has revived memories of a decade ago, when Mr Odinga, now 72, lost an election in controversial circumstances that sparked a wave of political and ethnic unrest in which 1,200 people were killed and 600,000 displaced.

Kofi Annan, the former UN head who mediated during that crisis, earlier issued a statement warning Kenya’s leaders to “be careful with their rhetoric and actions in this tense atmosphere”.
