Anzac Cove memorial honouring Australians to be removed for Islamist inscription

A RENOVATION of a revered Anzac Cove memorial honouring fallen Australian soldiers has sparked controversy after the Turkish Government suggested it may be replaced by an Islamic interpretation of the role Diggers played in the Gallipoli invasion.

Familiar words attributed to Turkey’s founding father, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk — likening Australia’s dead “Johnnies” to Ottoman “Mehmets” and welcoming them to rest in his country’s soil — have been removed, according to The Guardian.

The renovation of the 1985 monument has heightened suspicions that the refurbished memorial could reflect a growing Islamist interpretation by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration of Australia’s part in the 1915 Anzac invasion of Gallipoli.

UPDATE Portugal: 25 people killed in forest fires northeast of Lisbon

Public broadcaster RTP says another 20 have been injured, including six firefighters

A huge forest fire in central Portugal killed at least 25 people and injured 20 others, most of them burning to death in their cars, the government said on Sunday.

Several hundred firefighters and 160 vehicles were dispatched late on Saturday to tackle the blaze, which broke out in the afternoon in the municipality of Pedrogao Grande before spreading fast across several fronts.

“Unfortunately this seems to be the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires,” the visibly moved prime minister Antonio Costa said.

“The number of fatalities could still rise,” he said at the Civil Protection headquarters near Lisbon. “The priority now is to save those people who could still be in danger.”

Portugal was sweltering under a severe heatwave on Saturday, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in several regions.

Around 60 forest fires broke out across the country during the night, with 1,700 firefighters battling to put them out…

IUD: Best Birth Control. 1st Wife RIP, had this 23yrs NO Problems – But No One is Using it: Report Time Social

Just 9% of American women of childbearing age have an IUD and ONLY 3% AUSTRALIAN—compared with 23% of French women and 41% of women in China.

Up against bad PR and a lack of awareness, reproductive health groups are leading the charge to make the IUD a first line of defense against unplanned pregnancy. It won’t be easy.

Most women have been there: sitting in their gynecologist’s office, having yet another unsatisfying conversation about yet another unsatisfying form of birth control, wanting to try something new.

The IUD is a very small T-shaped rod inserted by a doctor into the uterus, where it emits either the hormone progestin or copper, both of which are hostile to sperm. There are three FDA-approved IUDs available in the U.S.—Mirena and Skyla, which are hormonal, and ParaGard, which is wrapped in copper coils—and they are all extremely effective, with a failure rate of less than one pregnancy per 100 women—compared with 9 per 100 women on the Pill.

So why the slow rate of adoption in the U.S.? It’s largely due to the fact that the IUD is still the subject of widespread misconceptions. The device is plagued by a troubled history dating back to the ’70s, when an earlier version of the device called the Dalkon Shield was yanked from the market after being linked to infertility and infections. Current versions are smaller and far safer, with almost none of the risks, but the stigma is hard to erase—both among women and also among the physicians who prescribe birth control.

“IUDs help women work on other parts of their life before they’re ready to have kids,” says Louise Cohen, vice president of Public Health Solutions. “We want to increase the degree to which women learn about them—whether through a physician or social media—and we will have them readily available when they want them.”

Seven U.S. Sailors Confirmed Dead After Collision With Cargo Ship

The bodies of the seven sailors were recovered from inside the USS Fitzgerald as the investigation into what caused the collision off the coast of Japan continues.

The seven sailors were found in a berthing area of the vessel below the waterline, the officials said.

The USS Fitzgerald collided with the Philippines-registered ACX Crystal early Saturday local time, about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, near Tokyo. The impact caused significant damage to the 500-foot-long Fitzgerald above and below the waterline, resulting in flooding, the Navy said.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is continuing, U.S. and Japanese officials say.

Nippon Yusen K.K . , the Japanese shipping company that operates the 728-foot-long ACX Crystal cargo ship, said all of the 20 crew members were safe. The company said it would fully cooperate with an investigation into the cause of the collision…

House Of Cards Has Collapsed, And It’s Partly Our Fault

It should have finished after season four, but we begged for more.

It’s only a TV show, but we have loved it passionately, and we waited long and hard for the latest instalment. There’s no easy way to say this, but here it is: ‘House of Cards’ season 5 is a dog.

If you haven’t watched it yet, don’t worry, I’m not about to spoil it for you (the series creators have done a perfectly good job of that all by themselves). But to save yourself heartbreak, you should know up front that the House of Cards has finally collapsed, just as its name suggests.

The stylish, subtle political thriller that obsessed us for four seasons has become, in its fifth, a parody of itself. The plot — always verging on unbelievable — has become preposterous. Frank and Claire Underwood have gone from power-hungry schemers (plausible enough) to US President and Vice-President (stretching credibility here) to a pair of psychopaths on a killing spree.

In one of the more ludicrous scenes, Frank pushes a major character down the stairs outside the Oval Office to delay an investigation into his activities. With all those Southern accents, all you can think of is Scarlett O’Hara tumbling down the staircase in ‘Gone With the Wind’…

Karl Stefanovic left Today show early to sneak to Bora Bora for romantic break with girlfriend

IT was the mystery disappearance that had TV audiences scratching their heads.

But Karl Stefanovic’s abrupt departure from his hosting duties on Today last week was, in fact, a well-orchestrated plot to avoid paparazzi and embark on yet another romantic tropical getaway with girlfriend Jasmine Yarbrough.

The Sunday Telegraph revealed Stefanovic and his shoe-designer girlfriend are soaking up the sun in the Polynesian playground Bora Bora aboard the mega-yacht of Stefanovic’s best pal James Packer.

The trio are among a small group enjoying a lavish stay aboard Packer’s 87m converted icebreaker Arctic P for the next few days.

It is understood Stefanovic, who took time off work to spend two weeks in Hawaii with Yarbrough back in May, left nothing to chance this time around, secretly bolting from Nine’s studios shortly before 8am on Thursday…

Grenfell fire: MPs attack Kensington council for failure to spend £270m reserves on housing

grenfell-tower-fire-victims.jpg

The council responsible for Grenfell Tower, where at least 58 people are now thought to have lost their lives after Wednesday’s horrific fire, has been accused of carrying out “unacceptable” financial practises after it emerged the borough had stockpiled £274m of usable reserves following years of chronic underspending.

Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy, whose friend Khadija Saye was killed in the blaze, said very serious questions needed to be asked about why the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) was running a budget surplus despite repeated warnings from residents that the block posed a fire risk…

Super Netball: Sunshine Coast Lightning emphatically beat Giants in inaugural grand final

The Sunshine Coast Lightning have won the first Super Netball title with a 65-48 win over the Giants in the grand final.

Lightning goalkeeper Geva Mentor did a number on Giants shooter Kristina Brice and Susan Pettitt — finishing the game with four rebounds, four deflections and an intercept — and her effort was matched at the other end.

Goal-attack Stephanie Wood was superb with 16 goals and 20 assists, while national star shooter Caitlin Bassett was as influential as ever, nailing 49 of her 51 shots.

Sunshine Coast’s win continues Queensland’s dominance of the domestic netball scene, with the Firebirds winning the last two trans-Tasman titles leading up to the introduction of Super Netball.

Tamworth bull rider Bradie Gray regains consciousness after being stomped by bull at Wyoming rodeo

A bull rider from NSW is in a serious but improving condition after a bull threw him off and stomped on his chest while he was competing in a rodeo in the United States.

Bradie Gray, who hails from Tamworth, has suffered broken ribs, a bruised aorta and collapsed lungs after the incident at Wyoming’s College National Finals Rodeo.

The 20-year-old had no pulse when he arrived at the Wyoming Medical Centre and was placed in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator.

Gray was bucked off by a bull named Levi the Boss who then stood on his chest.

Gray was able to stand up and was pulled into a bucking chute where he was put on a backboard and taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The College National Finals Rodeo said Gray had undergone two surgeries and his condition was now stable.

Grenfell Tower: Police: 58 missing, presumed dead in London fire

London police say 58 people who were in Grenfell Tower are still missing and assumed to be dead.

Police Commander Stuart Cundy said Saturday that this number, which was based on reports from the public, may rise. He says it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead in the public housing block that was devastated by a fire early Wednesday.

He said there may have been people in the tower that police are not aware of, which would add to the death toll.

He says the search for remains had been paused because of safety concerns but has resumed. Emergency workers have reached the top of the 24-story tower.

Cundy promised an exhausting investigation into the tragedy. He says “my heart goes out to those affected.”

Mistrial declared in Bill Cosby sex-assault trial

Jurors in Pennsylvania could not reach consensus on the three charges against the once-revered comedian. Prosecutor says he will retry Cosby.

A Pennsylvania judge declared a mistrial Saturdayafter a jury was “hopelessly deadlocked” on sexual-assault charges against Bill Cosby, the comic legend whose legacy as a promoter of wholesome values has been tarnished by a years-long sex and drugging scandal. As the mistrial was declared, Cosby sat at the defense table with his chin held high, a flat, blank look on his face. Across the well of the courtroom, jurors stood one-by-one in the jury box and said, “Yes,” as the judge asked whether each whether they agreed that the jury is “hopelessly deadlocked.” The jurors answered without hesitation, but several slumped forward in their chairs, elbows on their knees and fingers knit, looks of frustration on their faces.

After the questioning was done, the entertainer sat back in his chair, holding a slender cane that has been with him inside the courtroom each day to his chest. Cosby’s family was not in the courtroom to hear the judge’s decision.

The jury filed out almost within arm’s reach of Andrea Constand, Cosby’s accuser. She stood respectfully, with a strained smile on her face. Afterwards, prosecutor Kevin Steele announced in court that he will retry Cosby.

The jurors, who had complained of exhaustion, deliberated 52 hours before finally saying it could not reach a verdict on three counts of aggravated indecent assault against the 79-year-old entertainer. But the hung jury does not end Cosby’s legal troubles because he could be retried on the same charges and is still facing lawsuits filed by some of the 60 women who have accused him of sexual assault, rape or sexual harassment…

The attack took place at a base in the north of the country on Saturday.

Abdul Qahar Araam, the Afghan Army’s 209th Corps spokesman, said the soldier shot and killed four US troops inside the base, news agency Reuters reported.

The US military command, based in the capital Kabul, said they were “aware of an incident” at Camp Shaheen.

The camp, in the northern city of Mazar-i-Shariff, is the base of the 209th Corps.
