Demountable classroom falls off truck. GREAT Northern Highway has been closed

GREAT Northern Highway has been closed after a truck lost its demountable classroom load in Midland.

Witnesses said the transportable classroom came off the rear of the semi-trailer around 2.40pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The classroom was blocking the left lane just after Reid Highway while debris blocked the right hand lane for motorists heading north.

Main Roads WA has closed the Great Northern Highway with a crane called out to remove the classroom from the highway.

The highway is closed north of Reid Highway with detours in place for motorists.

Someone just bought R2-D2 for over $2 million

Sorry, Luke — but it looks like both your lightsaber and R2-D2 have new owners.

In an auction that I’d like to pretend took place in front of a Sandcrawler in the middle of a desert, someone reportedly just dropped over $2 million dollars on R2-D2.

“But wait — is it the R2? Like, the one used in the original trilogy?”

Alas, as far as anyone knows, the answer to that question can never really be “yes”. There were multiple R2s built for different situations across the original films — a few for when Kenny Baker was inside, a few for action scenes, etc. Meanwhile, most of them were gutted and re-purposed as necessary as the series continued.

This unit, then, is one that’s pieced together from bits and bobs across the many models across the films, with a final product thats said to be the most collectively “film used” known to exist. It’s made up of things like:

  • The top dome and articulating eye lens as controlled by Kenny Baker in A New Hope
  • Two legs used in Empire, and one created for Episode 1
  • Accent/detail pieces on the body from A New Hope

Presumably not included: a hologram of a princess declaring you her only hope.

One could go all Ship of Theseus here and ask how many parts of an object can be swapped/replaced before something is no longer that object — but given that “that object” arguably never existed in a single permanent form, it’s all a bit moot. And in cases like this, beauty is in the eye of the person dropping the fat stack of cash.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Here’s when the next trailer is expected to drop

It doesn’t look like we’ll have much longer to wait, however, as the BBFC – British Board of Film Classification – has posted the classification for a brand new trailer for the film, running at 1 minute and 31 seconds.

That’s, interestingly, shorter than the 2 minutes and 12 seconds initial teaser, though it falls in line with what the studio did with The Force Awakens; there, the studio dropped two short teasers a few months apart, before later launching into the advertising campaign in earnest around two months before release…

Australia seeks $180m US anti-radiation missiles

Australia is looking to spend more than $180 million on anti-radiation missiles for its Growler aircraft fleet, according to a US defence agency.

The US State Department has approved the possible sale and Congress has been notified, a news release from the country’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency says.

“Australia is requesting these missiles for its Electronic Attack EA-18G Growler aircraft,” it says about the missiles, which are designed for attacking ground-based radar.

Explosion hits police compound in southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir

An explosion in a police compound in Turkey’s southeastern city of Diyarbakir wounded several people and sent a large plume of grey smoke rising over surrounding buildings on Tuesday, but the cause of the blast was not immediately clear.

A police source said the explosion appeared to have taken place in a vehicle repair section of the police compound, causing part of the roof to collapse and wounding at least four people. The Dogan news agency said one was in a critical condition.

The blast comes ahead of a hotly contested referendum on Sunday on broadening President Tayyip Erdogan’s powers, a constitutional change opposed by many in the country’s predominantly Kurdish southeast.

The explosion was in the central, largely residential district of Baglar, where a car bombing by suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants wounded scores of people last November.

Diyarbakir is the largest city in Turkey’s southeast, where the PKK has fought an insurgency against the state for more than three decades to press demands for Kurdish autonomy. Violence has flared since a ceasefire collapsed in July 2015.
