Who’s the beast of Broadchurch? We haven’t a cluedo!

Never before have Broadchurch’s duo of DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller (pictured) looked so grim-faced, writes CHRIS HASTINGS. But with the number of suspects in the town it’s no wonder.

The investigation into the brutal rape of Trish Winterman (Julie Hesmondhalgh) that dominates series three, continues to widen, and it now seems that almost every man in the sleepy Dorset seaside town is a suspect…

US-led Coalition says it BOMBED Mosul site with 200 civilians killed

The US-led coalition against the Islamic State group said that it bombed a neighbourhood in west Mosul, Iraq where civilians were reportedly killed 200 by aerial bombing.

An initial review of strike data… indicates that, at the request of the Iraqi security forces, the coalition struck (ISIS) fighters and equipment, March 17, in west Mosul at the location corresponding to allegations of civilian casualties,’ it said in a statement released on Saturday.

Iraqi officials and witnesses say that strikes in west Mosul have killed dozens of people in recent days, but the number of victims could not be independently confirmed, and the toll from the specific strike referenced by the coalition was unclear.

Energy tracking ‘Numen’ device could help slash home power bills

Imagine if you could see how much energy every device in your home was using in real time.

That’s the idea behind new technology developers say could dramatically cut power bills.

Perth start-up Ecocentric has teamed with the CSIRO to create a system called “Numen”, which monitors the efficiency of everything from your fridge to your tablet when it’s plugged in.

“Numen is a revolutionary device that is going to build a new understanding of the way we use energy,” Tim Bray from Ecocentric told the ABC.

Mr Bray said the Numen was the missing link in Australia’s energy debate.

He said the problem was most people have no idea how much energy they’re using, so it’s hard for them to become more efficient…

Essendon overruns Hawthorn late to win by 25 points, Jarryd Roughead’s goal lights up MCG

Essendon has lived up to its ‘comeback’ moniker, but an impressive fighting win over Hawthorn was just one part of a night that was all about comebacks.

Welcoming back a number of players who were suspended for a year after the ridiculously drawn-out supplements saga, the team has been all about its fight back from the depths.

Indeed, returning skipper Dyson Heppell and former captain Jobe Watson were influential in the 17.14 (116) to 12.19 (91) win that saw the Bombers kick 10 of the last 13 goals in the game.

Heppell ultimately finished with an outlandishly good stat line of three goals, 34 disposals and seven tackles, with Watson adding 27 disposals and eight tackles.

But the biggest ‘comeback’ moment of the night probably belonged to someone else — Jarryd Roughead.

UTS Professor Chonyi Feng detained in China, stopped from boarding return flight to Australia

A Sydney professor and critic of growing Chinese government influence in Australia has been prevented from boarding a flight to return home to Sydney, and the ABC understands he has been told he is not allowed to leave China.

Chongyi Feng, an Associate Professor in Chinese Studies at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), had been visiting China but friends say he was stopped from taking a flight to Australia while at Guangzhou airport in southern China on Saturday night.

It was the second time in as many days that the prominent Sydney-based academic and China expert had been blocked from boarding a flight.

WA Labor misses out on upper house working majority by one seat

The remaining votes in the WA election have been counted, with Labor narrowly missing out on a working majority in the Legislative Council by one seat.

The results mean Labor is likely to be reliant on the crossbench to pass legislation but that could change if it can court a Liberal MP to accept the president’s position.

Port to Pub swim: Teenage swimmers dominate, man joins swim before proposing

PERTH’S young guns sank the competition in the gruelling “Port to Pub” swim, with two of the 20km winners not yet old enough to drive.

New South Wales man Michael Hanisch had told girlfriend Rachael Elkaim he would remain on the east coast while she took on the 25km course.

But Mr Hanisch – who like his partner earned a Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming last year – had secretly arranged to fly to Perth.

He jumped into the ocean alongside a stunned Ms Elkaim for the final 2km, and then proposed at the finish line.

Ms Elkaim, who accepted, said: “I had no idea.

“When he went down on one knee I thought ‘It’s about time’.”

Civilian deaths from US-led airstrikes hit record-high under Donald Trump

displaced-mosul-4.jpgA non-profit organisation that tracks civilian casualties caused by airstrikes in the Middle East said it has shifted nearly all of its resources to track a surge of claims regarding US-led strikes in Syria and Iraq. The group, called Airwars.org, had been tracking deaths caused by both Russian and US airstrikes but said in a statement Friday that it was suspending its work on “alleged Russian actions in Syria — so as best to focus our limited resources on continuing to properly monitor and assess reported casualties from the US and its allies.

UN fears 200 died in coalition airstrike on Mosul

The UN looks into reports that 200 people, mostly civilians, died in an air strike in the past week.

The United Nations has raised grave concerns about reports of high civilian casualties in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

A senior UN official in Iraq said she was stunned by accounts of “terrible loss of life”, after claims that at least 200 people had been killed in an air strike by the US-led coalition.

US warplanes are supporting the Iraqi Army’s mission to retake Mosul from the Islamic State (IS).

US media reports say an investigation is under way.

It is not known exactly when the deaths are alleged to have happened.

However, reporters in western Mosul’s Jadideh neighbourhood said they saw 50 bodies being pulled out of buildings on Friday, after they were razed in air attacks earlier in March.

Line of Duty S4: Why the BBC series is the saviour of British TV -TRAILER

line-of-duty.jpgThe UK can be split into two camps: those who love Line of Duty and those who are yet to love Line of Duty – there can surely be no middle ground; once you’ve taken a bite into the BBC crime procedural, it’s practically impossible to avoid being consumed by Jed Mercurio’s patchwork of well-crafted thrills, engrossing characterisation and stunning reveals you’d be mistaken for assuming no longer appeared on British television.

Clive James: ‘Coogan and Brydon are the funniest couple since Laurel and Hardy’

Clive James: ‘Coogan and Brydon are the funniest couple since Laurel and Hardy’

Anyone who relishes what happens when Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon sit opposite each other in a restaurant will know that the real focus of the entertainment is on the actors at the other tables who are pretending not to laugh. While Coogan and Brydon do uncanny impersonations of 007, the extras have to do uncanny impersonations of corpses, and sometimes they can’t keep it up. They crack a rib. And they are, of course, quite right. Coogan and Brydon are the funniest couple since Laurel and Hardy.

And it’s all done just by evoking stuff we’ve seen already. But there’s no “just” about it. Such accurate mimicry demands deep concentration. The basic shtick of their echolalic duel to the death depends on Coogan being even more fanatical about getting it right than Brydon is. Indeed, Coogan might not entirely be bluffing when he suggests, in a voice nearly his own for once, that mere hilarity might not always be the whole aim. The true intention is to borrow a state of being.
