Rockhampton prepares for the worst flood in five decades

Authorities are going door-to-door warning householders to abandon low-lying areas ahead of the expected record-breaking flooding this week in Rockhampton, Queensland.

Over 5,000 properties, including 3,000 homes, will face being inundated when the Fitzroy River reaches major flood levels on Monday and then peaks up to 9.4 metres on Wednesday – a level that hasn’t been recorded since 1954 according to the Rockhampton Regional Council, ABC reported.

Colombia landslide toll rises to 254

Flooding and mudslides in the Colombian city of Mocoa sent torrents of water and debris crashing onto houses overnight, killing 254 people, injuring hundreds and sending terrified residents.

Heavy rains caused several rivers to overflow, pushing sediment and rocks onto buildings and roads in the capital of southwestern Putumayo province and immobilising cars in mud in the early hours of Saturday.

‘It was torrential rainstorm, it got really strong between 11pm and 1am,’ said local resident Mario Usale, 42, who was looking for his father-in-law in the debris.

‘My mother-in-law was also missing, but we found her alive two kilometres away. She has head injuries, but she was conscious.’

Target Australia charge $72 for water after Cyclone Debbie

Target Australia is the second company to be accused of exploiting Queensland’s clean water shortage after putting a $72 price tag on a 24 pack of 600ml spring water bottles.

A picture of the water bottles was taken at a Target store in ex-Cyclone Debbie ravaged Bowen, Queensland.

Natalie Maher posted the picture to Facebook and said she thought the price was a mistake, however it was confirmed by a worker.

Russia/Flynn/Freedom Caucus Vortex of questions and tension at the White House

As another frenzied Washington week closes, the White House seems to be losing control of the quickening intrigue over Russia’s meddling in the election, and allegations of links between the Trump campaign and Kremlin associates.

Characteristically, President Donald Trump’s team is often escalating confrontations rather than dampening them. It’s a strategy that may be making the challenges more intractable by the hour.
Trump gave fresh life to the Russia controversy with a stunning Twitter burst about the legal position of his sacked national security adviser Michael Flynn. And he’s simultaneously waging war with the conservative House Freedom Caucus which helped deal him a stinging defeat over the repeal of Obamacare — setting up a fateful test of presidential authority.

Australian Firsts: Jessie Keith Miller, The First Aviatrix To Cross The Equator

Many of her achievements were shadowed by a murder trial involving her co-pilot.

Jessie Keith Miller was thrown into the international spotlight in the late 1920s when, escaping from the boredom of her life in Melbourne, she fled to the UK where she managed to convince British aviator Bill Lancaster to let her be his co-pilot.

Even though she’d never flown before, she became the first to woman fly across the equator — a 22,000km flight from England to Australia.

According to author Chrystopher Spicer who researched Miller’s life for his latest book, she achieved a multitude of ‘firsts’ for Australia. Spicer told The Huffington Post Australia due to unsavoury controversy in her life, Australians soon forgot about Miller (whose tongue-in-cheek nickname was ‘Chubbie.’)

Community Rallies To Free Elephant Herd Trapped In Muddy Bomb Crater

The elephants didn’t have much longer to live.

Eleven elephants have been saved from ghastly deaths in Cambodia thanks to the collaboration of local villagers and wildlife conservation groups.

People living near the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary in the province of Mondulkiri saw that the pachyderms were trapped in a large pit that a U.S. B52 bomb had originally created, the Cambodia Daily reported on Monday. In more recent years, the local community has been using the crater to store water.

The herd had apparently become stuck in the muddy pit, unable to scale the steep sides, when they wandered in to drink and bathe, according to LiveScience. By the time the local farmers spotted them on Sunday, it was clear they had been there for some time.

Shocking Website shows soldiers post X-rated photographs of women

A website set up by soldiers that parades their sexual partners over the internet has been uncovered – and could land the Ministry of Defence in hot water.

The site shows a collection of women – who have been dubbed ‘blockrats’ by the troops – performing sex acts, in barracks beds or leaving the facilities in a ‘walk of shame.’

But the soldiers may have shot themselves in the foot with their crass site, as anyone found to be involved is likely to be hit with heavy punishment, which could include military prison.

Photos capture the sheer scale of Debbie’s might and the resilience of people affected across both states.

The effects of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie are continuing to be felt across Queensland and northern parts of New South Wales.
