Hurricane Maria: Thousands evacuated as Puerto Rican dam starts to fail

Tens of thousands of people have been told to evacuate in Puerto Rico, with a dam starting to fail in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

Nearly 40 centimetres of rain has fallen on the mountains surrounding the Guajataca Dam since the Category 4 storm crossed the island, swelling the reservoir behind it.

Hume Highway cut by bushfire, temperature records tumble as east coast swelters

The main highway between Sydney and Canberra was cut by a bushfire and parts of New South Wales reached 40 degrees Celsius in September for the first time on record.

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service [RFS] said the blaze at Paddy’s River, near Wingello, crossed the highway and was out of control.
