The show’s writer, Peter Morgan, suggested that he has not shied away from the theory that the Queen’s husband, played by Matt Smith (pictured), had an affair early in their marriage.

His name has been linked with a bevy of beauties over the years – with such rumours always denied.

But Prince Philip’s character looks set to be called into question once again in the next series of The Crown, following comments by the writer of the lavish costume drama.

Peter Morgan suggested that he has not shied away from the theory that the Queen’s husband, played by Matt Smith, had an affair early in their marriage, declaring: ‘Doesn’t everyone in Britain know he had an affair?’
