Nadal survives early wobble to book last 16 spot in New York

(Reuters) – World number one Rafa Nadal ran into a spot of bother before crushing Argentine Leonardo Mayer and booked his place in the last 16 of the U.S. Open with a 6-7(3) 6-3 6-1 6-4 victory on Saturday.

The Spaniard, chasing his second grand slam title of the year, was on the back foot early on but once he found his rhythm, the contest was virtually over under a closed roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

North Korea says it has successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test

Officials in Japan and South Korea have concluded that the tremors detected in North Korea were a nuclear explosion, marking the sixth atomic test by Pyongyang since 2006

The shallow, 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook North Korea on Sunday, suggesting it had detonated a sixth nuclear device, hours after it said it had developed an advanced hydrogen bomb that possesses “great destructive power”.

“After examining the data we concluded that it was a nuclear tests,” Foreign Minister Taro Kono said at a briefing broadcast by public broadcaster NHK following a meeting of Japan’s National Security Council.

Second earthquake detectedChina’s Earthquake Administration said it detected a second quake in North Korea of magnitude 4.6, which it termed as a “collapse”.The administration’s website said the second quake, measured at a depth of zero kilometres, came eight minutes after the firstquake, which it said was a “suspected explosion”.The co-ordinates of the two quakes were almost identical, according to figures provided by the administration.

After two marathons Federer sprints into fourth round U.S. Open

NEW YORK (Reuters) – After two marathons, Roger Federer had the after-burners on, sprinting past Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3 6-3 7-5 and into the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Saturday.

Chasing a sixth U.S. Open title, Federer needed just one hour and 46 minutes under a closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium to put away the 31st seed Lopez, leaving plenty in the tank after being forced to go the distance in his opening two matches.

It has been a far different start to the U.S. Open than Wimbledon where an economical Federer stormed to his 19th grand slam title without dropping a set.In his opening two matches at Flushing Meadows, a misfiring Federer had been forced to five sets, first by American young gun Frances Tiafoe then Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny.

After being broken eight times and committing a whopping 124 unforced errors in those first two contests, a focused Federer tightened up his game against Lopez, operating with his hallmark efficiency.“I struggled the first couple of rounds but I think that had something to do with my opponents. They came out and played very well,” Federer said in his post-match interview on court.

Tropical Storm Lidia leaves 7 dead in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Tropical Storm Lidia’s death toll rose to at least seven people, including two children, as the storm doused various states in Mexico with heavy rain on Saturday and left a severe trail of damage in the Baja California peninsula, authorities said.

The victims were either electrocuted or drowned while trying to cross streams, according to a report from the prosecutor’s office in the state of Baja California Sur, home to the tourist area Los Cabos, that was cited by local media.

The storm, which continued to churn through various states, particularly in Western Mexico, also cut off power and damaged homes and roads in Baja California Sur, where some 3,000 people were taken to shelter.Lidia was located 110 kilometers north of Punta Eugenia, moving at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour to the northeast with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, the National Hurricane Center in the U.S. said.

North Korea says it has developed more-advanced hydrogen bomb: KCNA

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea said on Sunday it has developed a more advanced nuclear weapon that has “great destructive power” and leader Kim Jong Un inspected a hydrogen bomb that will be loaded on a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The report by North Korea’s official KCNA news agency comes amid heightened regional tension following Pyongyang’s test launch of two ICBM-class missiles in July that potentially had a range of about 10,000 km (6,200 miles) that could hit many parts of the mainland United States.Under its leader Kim Jong Un, North Korea has pursued work on building nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missiles that can deliver them at an unprecedented pace, defying U.N. sanctions and international pressure.

Experts and officials have said North Korea could conduct its sixth nuclear test at any time, and that the reclusive country has maintained a readiness at its nuclear test site to conduct another detonation test at any time.

AFLW State of Origin: Victoria beats the Allies by 97 points at Docklands, Daisy Pearce stars

Victoria has scored a crushing win in the first-ever AFLW State of Origin at Docklands, beating the Allies side by 97 points on Saturday night. The Vics led by seven points at quarter-time, but they were far too strong from that point on, and ran out winners by 17.11 (113) to 2.4 (16).

Skipper Daisy Pearce was the star for Victoria, racking up 37 disposals and marshalling the Vics admirably in a dominant performance. The Allies’ Jess Wuetschner’s tackle earned a holding the ball call and she then kicked the opening goal, but after a string of early opportunities for the visitors, the home side hit back and quickly went in front.

The second quarter was where Victoria made the big move. Jasmine Garner grabbed the team’s third goal, and then a goal to Moana Hope boosted the lead to 19 points midway through the term.

The Allies needed a goal badly, and when Hayley Miller hit Tayla Harris on a lead, the former Brisbane star converted to keep the visitors in the mix.But Victoria hit back with a snap from Sarah D’Arcy and the lead was back to 20 points…

#F1 Lewis Hamilton breaks Michael Schumacher’s pole position record. Dramatic last lap in Pista Magica

Lewis Hamilton has hailed a truly “epic day” after writing his name above Michael Schumacher’s as the all-time pole position king in the Formula One record books.

On an afternoon of suitably English weather at the historic Italian “Temple of Speed”, the Pista Magica, the Mercedes driver conjured up a lap worthy of the great German rainmaster himself to break the Formula One record previously held by his childhood idol.

After hours of waiting, with the rain still falling and the final seconds of the session ticking away, the triple world champion was rewarded with a time that drew gasps of appreciation. His lap of one minute and 35.554 seconds was more than 1.1 seconds quicker than anybody else at the fastest track on the calendar.By comparison, there was less than a second separating the top five in Belgium — the longest circuit of all — in qualifying.”It is very hard to find the words to explain how I feel,”

Hamilton said as his 69th pole position from 201 starts sank in.Schumacher, the seven-time world champion and former Ferrari great whose tally Hamilton had equalled in Belgium last weekend, ended his career with 68 from 307 races…
