WA Premier Mark McGowan says he will sack the City of Perth council if he is able to after it was reported councillors were asked to sign a statutory declaration that they had not been in contact with journalists about certain matters.

Mr McGowan said the statutory declaration was unacceptable and that he would follow due process to see if he could remove the council, which he described as an “embarrassment” to the state.

“I’ve been dissatisfied and angry at the City of Perth now for a long period of time,” he told reporters on Friday.

“You can’t threaten the press, you can’t threaten people with the prospect of prosecution for talking to the press.”
