Faceless fish surprises researchers

Lurking 4,000 meters below sea level, this fish doesn’t need eyes to swim in the dark.

A “faceless” deep-sea fish not seen for more than a century has been rediscovered by scientists trawling the depths of a massive abyss off Australia’s east coast, along with “amazing” quantities of rubbish.

The 40cm fish was rediscovered 4km below sea level in waters south of Sydney by scientists from Museums Victoria and the Australian government’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) on the weekend.

Dr Tim O’Hara, the chief scientist and expedition leader, who is a senior curator of marine invertebrates at Museums Victoria, said it was the first time the fish had been seen in waters off Australia since 1873, when one was dredged up by a British ship near Papua New Guinea…

Los Angeles: San Francisco homicide police have made an arrest in the beating death of Australian tourist Matthew Bate.

Mr Bate, 33, was holidaying in the US and in the early hours of Friday was involved in a verbal altercation that became physical outside San Francisco’s Da Vinci Villa Hotel, police said.

Mr Bate suffered injuries in the incident and was pronounced dead at a local hospital

Alex Shellum was in the nearby Mudlark pub with his girlfriend at the time of the incident.

“At around 22:00 BST an injured woman came into the pub seeking assistance,” he told the BBC.

“She was bleeding heavily from the neck — it appeared that her throat had been cut. People sought to stem the bleeding and the pub was closed.”

He said that people immediately went to her aid and the pub was closed. he said he also saw another person being given CPR.

Matthew Jackson, 23, was out drinking with pals when he got a call from his girlfriend.

He told The Sun: “She phoned me in tears saying she’d just seen a man have his throat slit in a bar near London Bridge.

“She was screaming and crying, I was so worried.

“Then her phone cut out and I’ve not been able to speak to her since.

“It’s absolutely terrifying, I’m just desperate for any information.”

‘THEY WERE STABBING PEOPLE’

Witnesses also said they saw two men stabbing people outside the well-known Roast restaurant in Borough market according to The Guardian. A chef from the nearby Fish restaurant said: “I saw two guys with big knives downstairs outside Roast. They were stabbing people. The police were running away, they were community police. They were normal officers, they were running away.

“The guy with the knife was killing two people. We were shouting ‘stop, stop’ and people threw chairs at them. Police came and shot straight away.”

Another staff member from Fish said: “I saw two people in Breadhead bakery, they had blood on them, they were civilians. I never expected to see this happen here.”

Watts’ son Jon Watts posted an emotional Facebook tribute to the father he called his “best mate.”

“I am in absolute shock by it all as he was more than just a regular dad, he was my confidant, friend, accomplice, drinking buddy, singing partner, comedian, and so much more,” he posted.

I am absolutely devastated to report that my wonderful Father and Best Mate, John K. Watts has passed away this evening. I am in absolute shock by it all as he was more than just a regular Dad, he was my confidant, friend, accomplice, drinking buddy, singing partner, comedian, and so much more. Words cannot express my deep sadness and I am sincerely at a loss as to what to do. Sleep well mate – and thanks for all the memories. I love you so very much and I have no idea really how to go on from here.

London #UPDATE: Six people dead in addition to three attackers, police confirm

AT least six people have been killed and as many as 20 injured after terrorists mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge and then went on a stabbing rampage.

A van was seen ploughing into pedestrians at London Bridge and eyewitnesses reported gunfire and stabbings. Three terrorists — reportedly wearing stab proof vests — emerged from the van and began the stabbing attack.

Scotland Yard they are still trying to determine if there are more suspects at large, amid reports SAS troops had been flown into London to hunt for the suspects.

The three terrorists, wearing “suicide vests”, were gunned down by police in dramatic scenes at Borough Market.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incidents at London Bridge and also at Borough Market were terror attacks. A third stabbing at Vauxhall was initially feared to be part of the attack but police now believe this is unrelated.

One horrified witness had told The Sun he was left covered in blood after a man stormed a restaurant and slashed diners.

Jag Sandue was at the Black and Blue steak restaurant when he said he saw several men storm in, armed with knives.

A vehicle struck pedestrians on London Bridge and one or more attackers stabbed people at nearby Borough Market, police and witnesses said, in what authorities said were terrorist incidents that injured at least 20 people.

A hero taxi driver has revealed how he tried to knock down three men armed with 12-inch hunting knives who reportedly stabbed pedestrians after mowing down up to 20 people with a white van on London Bridge.

Witnesses reported hearing ‘rapid gunfire’ amid reports that least seven people have been stabbed, leaving bodies ‘strewn’ on the road in central London. One of the casualties is reportedly a police officer.

But amid the horror a cabbie – who said he saw the men brandishing ‘long blades’ stabbing ‘randomly’ on Borough High Street – spun around his vehicle and attempted to halt the terror.

Speaking to LBC, he said: ‘I thought, “I’m gonna try and hit him, I’m gonna try and knock him down”.

‘I spun the cab round, I was about to ram one of them, but he side-stepped and three police officers came running towards them with their batons drawn.

‘I was shouting at everybody, just get away from the area, stay back, just run the other way. There were a good few hundred people out there.’

The driver, who did not identify himself, continued: ‘He’s veered across the road towards the right hand of where Southwark Cathedral is and rammed it where the steps are.

‘He just rammed it towards them, wedged it in between the lamppost and the steps and so he’s hit people there.

‘They’ve jumped out of the van and started stabbing people randomly. There was a scattering of people.’

A GANG of five terrorists drove a B&Q van into pedestrians at 50mph on London Bridge before attacking revellers with hunting knives. Up to seven people were feared dead and 20 hurt in the 10pm …

The gang had metal canisters strapped to their chests and two were gunned down – believe killed – by armed police, witnesses said.

Another three were thought to be still on the run as the police have confirmed that the attacks in London Bridge and Borough Market are “terror incidents.”

One bystander is believed to have been shot in the head by crossfire.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed a third incident in the Vauxhall area, after tweeting “you must run, hide and tell,” which later turned out to be an unrelated stabbing.

Fifty armed police have stormed Monument station with police dogs and have told people to run. The travel hub along with nearby Bank station, both across the river from London Bridge, have been closed.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said the “terrible incident” is being treated as a  “potential act of terrorism”.

Guests at hotels in the vicinity of the attack have been evacuated. Zaven Jordan who is visiting from Australia was staying in Novotel Southwark and was woken by a fire alarm.

When guests assembled outside the hotel he said police told everyone to run.

“The police didn’t just give directions, they were yelling run,” he said. “When a fire alarm goes off you expect to assemble and then go back inside in a few minutes. We grabbed our passports just in case, but we weren’t really ready for this.”

He is now walking the streets trying to find somewhere to stay. He says the hotel is not answering their phone, he had been turned away by another hotel and he is uncertain where in the city it is safe to go…

British police are responding to three emergency incidents in London on Saturday night – one on London Bridge involving a van, a possible knife attack at Borough Market and a third in Vauxhall.

Some media outlets are reporting police as saying more than one person has been killed.

The incidents are being treated as terrorist attacks but their exact nature is yet to be confirmed.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says the incidents in London are being treated as a ‘potential terror attack’.
