Liberal Party not running candidates in Perth, Fremantle by-elections
THE Liberal Party will not run a candidate in up-coming by-elections in the federal seats of Perth and Fremantle, sparking outrage from party members.
WA Liberal Senator Dean Smith, who ran the party’s campaign in Perth in 2016, yesterday described the party’s decision not to run a candidate in Perth as “nonsense”.
“The 35,000 Perth electors who gave us their primary vote at the 2016 election deserve the opportunity to vote for a Liberal candidate,” Senator Smith said.

West Coast Eagles make it seven wins on the trot with 25-point triumph over GWS Giants at Spotless Stadium
The red-hot West Coast Eagles have remained unbeaten on their travels with a 25-point win over Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.
The Eagles kicked five straight goals in the second quarter to take control of a game they won 12.14 (86) to 8.13 (61).
It was a seventh straight victory for West Coast, who moved to the top of the table above Richmond, who they host next week, and improved their record to 7-1 and 3-0 outside Western Australia.
Missing Nic Naitanui, Luke Shuey and Jeremy McGovern, the Eagles underlined their depth with a strong performance against a Giants side that lost Phil Davis and Matt de Boer during the game.
The Eagles had the most potent forward at Spotless Stadium in Jack Darling, who kicked four goals, all in the first half.
Autumn temperatures set new record as Perth soars above 32C
If you thought the 32-degree day in Perth felt a little odd for this time of year, you would be right.
The city recorded a maximum of 32.7 degrees Celsius at 1:04pm — making it the latest 30-degree or above day in autumn on record.
The previous record for Perth was set on May 9, 1962, when the city recorded exactly 30C.
The temperature is well above the May average maximum of 22.3C.
The unseasonable warmth, which is set to continue into next week, is due to a high pressure system in the bight and a trough of low pressure off the west coast pushing warm air from the north towards Perth.

Perth barrister Lloyd Rayney’s lie could see a legal ban, has been recommended to be kicked out of the legal profession for lying to a magistrate.
LLOYD Rayney — the barrister cleared of murdering his wife who then won a $2.6 million defamation payout from the police who accused him — has been recommended to be kicked out of the legal profession for lying to a magistrate.
For the first time since a State Administrative Tribunal ruling in January, it can now be reported how Mr Rayney has been found guilty of professional misconduct by a panel headed by Supreme Court judge Peter Martino.
That finding could spell the end of Mr Rayney’s career in the law in WA.
The findings revolve around allegations that before his wife Corryn’s death, as the couple’s marriage crumbled, the former top prosecutor covertly recorded their heated conversations using a dictaphone.
Although he was never charged or convicted of a criminal offence over the recordings, he was quizzed about them by magistrate Martin Flynn, in secret, in November 2009.

Why West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui deserves suspension
Nic Naitanui deserves his one-game rough conduct ban, according to football writer Mark Duffield.
The Eagles will challenge the star ruckman’s penalty for his tackle on Karl Amon in Saturday’s 42-point win over Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium.
Naitanui gave away a free kick when he drove Amon into the ground in a tackle in the final quarter of the match.
Amon got up and was fine to take his kick but that hasn’t saved Naitanui from a ban, with West Coast opting to challenge at Wednesday night’s tribunal.
“The reality is he’s driven (Karl Amon) forward and downwards, and he’s driven his head into the dirt,” Duffield said.
“If you think that’s acceptable, you would also have to accept that if he does this 20 times someone is going to end up on a stretcher, and if he does it 50 times someone will end up in a wheelchair…

Judge apologised to an angry jury, after the trial of two brothers alleged to have been harbouring scores of illegal workers at their northern suburbs tomato farm, abandoned after eight months
A judge has apologised to an angry and weary jury, after the trial of two brothers alleged to have been harbouring scores of illegal workers at their northern suburbs tomato farm — which was originally scheduled to take eight weeks — collapsed after nearly eight months.
District Court Judge Stephen Scott today dismissed the jury which since October had been hearing the cases against Minh Canh Le, his brother Michael Le and three alleged accomplices, who were also accused of laundering the money made from the exploitation of illegal workers.
After months of detailed evidence, dozens of witnesses and numerous delays — prompted by repeated arguments from defence lawyers they had not been disclosed all the relevant evidence — the trial was officially abandoned last week.
On Monday, the remaining 12 jury members were told by Judge Scott that despite their diligence and considerable disruption to their lives, they would be not be required to bring down a verdict.
“You didn’t sign up for seven months, you didn’t sign up for 11 months – you signed up for 10 weeks,” Judge Scott said.

Spanish MotoGP: Spectacular three-way crash sees Marc Marquez take overall points lead
Marc Marquez has won the Spanish MotoGP to take the overall points lead after several of his rivals crashed out of the race.
Pole-sitter Cal Crutchlow wiped out before a three-rider crash involving previous points leader Andrea Dovizioso, his Ducati teammate Jorge Lorenzo, and Dani Pedrosa.
Pedrosa, who underwent wrist surgery less than a month ago, was thrown high over his bike and onto the asphalt after trying to go past the two Ducatis on the inside of the sunny Jerez circuit in southern Spain.
Lorenzo came across into the corner as Dovizioso went wide, colliding with Pedrosa and sending the two Ducatis into the gravel.
All three riders walked away from the crash — not before some wild gesticulating between the drivers on the gravel near their stricken bikes — although Pedrosa complained of severe pain in his right hip.
