Supercell thunderstorms lash Australia’s east coast; Sydney at peak hour

Damaging winds, heavy rains and large hailstones hit parts of New South Wales on Monday morning with Sydney residents told they could be facing the same conditions around 5pm as the storms roll in.

Heavy rain, large hailstones and tornadoes have been forecast as supercell storms returned to batter New South Wales on Monday.

Storms hit the Central and North West Slopes and Plains, the Hunter, Riverina and parts of the Central, Lower Western and Northern Tablelands early on Monday, with residents warned of the risk of flash flooding.

Meanwhile those in Sydney have been told they could face similar conditions from 5pm, with 70mm of rain expected to drench the city overnight into Tuesday.
