Harvey Live Updates: 47 deaths in Texas so far linked to the storm
Fire engulfed part of a chemical plant northeast of Houston on Friday evening, sending thick black smoke high into the sky, a statement from Arkema, the owner of the plant, confirmed. It was the same facility where, on Thursday, a chemical storage trailer exploded, setting off a fire. Flooding from Harvey, once a Category 4 hurricane that hit southeast Texas last week, had knocked out the refrigeration system needed to keep the chemicals stable.
Two trailers were on fire Friday evening, Rachel Moreno, a spokeswoman for the Houston Fire Marshal’s office, confirmed.
“There are six more trailers there with the potential to do the same,” she said, but she could not predict whether any more trailers were immediately at risk. The company said in the statement Friday evening, “We will likely see additional incidents. Please do not return to the area within the evacuation zone until local emergency response authorities announce it is safe to do so.”
The company has previously said that the smoke from the burning chemicals can irritate the eyes, nose and lungs, but it was not clear how much of a health threat the new release posed.
Because moving the chemicals off the site or restoring cooling was not feasible until the flooding retreated, there was no choice but to wait until the rest of the chemicals also burned off, said Janet Smith, an Arkema spokeswoman, on Friday evening.

Hundreds of thousands [half mil] march in Barcelona: Show unity after Islamist attacks
BARCELONA (Reuters) – Hundreds of thousands marched in Barcelona in a show of unity on Saturday evening amid chants of ’I am not afraid’ after two Islamist militant attacks in the Spanish region of Catalonia last week left 15 dead.
The march was led by shopkeepers and residents of the city’s well-known Las Ramblas boulevard, where a van ploughed into pedestrians on Aug. 17, killing 13 and injuring over a hundred. The crowd applauded representatives of the police, fire services and medical professions who also led the march.
Spain’s King Felipe, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and the head of Catalonia’s regional government Carles Puigdemont, dressed in dark suits, walked in the throng as people cheered and bore red, yellow and white roses – the colours of Spain’s second-biggest city.
“We are here to say we’re not afraid, we are united and we want peace,” said 59-year-old pensioner Victoria Padilla as she marched. Slogans carried by marchers read “The best answer: peace” and “No to Islamophobia”.
Police estimated the march at half a million people.

Convicted Pervert Rolf Harris hires detectives to dig up dirt on his victims
Harris allegedly groped the seven complainants on TV sets, radio shows, during a youth festival, and a party at a BBC studio in separate incidents between 1971-2004.
The former star was jailed for five years and nine months in 2014 after being convicted of sexually assaulting four women, the youngest aged just seven, between 1968 and 1986.
Southwark Crown Court heard today all four victims from the first trial have made claims for compensation.

Hundreds rescued as police smash international paedophile ring. 900 paedophiles have been arrested
A more than two-year investigation into the notorious Playpen network and its members led to the arrests, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Europol said, an announcement that came just days after a US court sentenced Playpen founder and administrator Steven Chase to 30 years in prison.
Playpen was buried deep online in what is known as the “darknet,” where Tor anonymity software and encryption hide often illegal activities.
In this case, it masked participants in a forum where people submitted and traded photographs and videos of the sexual abuse of children.
The nearly 900 arrests included dozens of abusers and child pornography creators.
Dubbed “Operation Pacifier,” the investigation began when the FBI used its own malware to effectively seize the Playpen website and server.
Operating it for several weeks more, investigators then hacked and tracked site users by sending malware to their computers.
In an operation that critics say was legally questionable, more than 1000 computers worldwide were hacked in this way by the FBI, and their users identified.
Lead FBI investigator Dan Alfin said the operation is ongoing.
“As they get smarter, we adapt, we find them,” he said.
“It’s a cat-and-mouse game, except it’s not a game. Kids are being abused, and it’s our job to stop that.”
Civil liberties groups however were strongly critical of the way the FBI took over the network and traced users with its own malware hacking tools.
A single search warrant should not have allowed investigators to gain access to and search more than 1000 private computers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation said in comments to some of the Playpen court cases.
“The warrant here did not identify any particular person to search or seize. Nor did it identify any specific user of the targeted website,” the organisation said.
“It did not even attempt to describe any series or group of particular users.”
In a statement, Steven Wilson, head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Center, said the case demonstrated how law enforcement needs to use such methods to fight criminals who can hide behind online anonymisation and encryption programs.
“We need to balance the rights of victims versus the right to privacy,” he said.
“If we operate by 19th century legal principles then we are unable to effectively tackle crime at the highest level.”

BREAKING NEWS: Arkansas executes first death row inmate in double lethal injection
Arkansas has executed the first of two death row members as part of Monday night’s double lethal injection.
Jack Jones was put to death at the Cummins Unit after the Supreme Court denied his final request for a stay.
Marcel Williams is set to die later on Monday night. It is the first double-execution in the nation since 2000.
Jones was sentenced to death for the 1995 rape and killing of Mary Phillips and the brutal beating of her 11-year-old daughter. He strangled the mother a cord to a coffee pot.
Before he was executed, he ate a last meal of of fried chicken, potato logs with tartar sauce, beef jerky bites, three candy bars, a chocolate milkshake and fruit punch.
In a letter earlier this month, Jones said he was ready to be killed by the state.
‘I forgive my executioners; somebody has to do it,’ wrote Jones, who had a leg amputated in prison because of diabetes and uses a wheelchair.
The letter, which his attorney read aloud at his clemency hearing, went on to say: ‘I shall not ask to be forgiven, for I haven’t the right.’
Williams was sent to death row for the 1994 rape and killing of 22-year-old Stacy Errickson, whom he kidnapped from a gas station in central Arkansas.

Domestic violence and guns: the hidden USA crisis ending women’s lives
In one mass shooting after another, some gun control advocates and journalists see a common thread: when domestic violence is not the immediate cause of a mass shooting, it was there as a warning sign in the history of the perpetrator.
On Monday, a husband murdered his wife, an elementary school teacher, and an eight-year-old child, opening fire on them in a classroom in San Bernardino, California, before turning the gun on himself, officials said. A nine-year-old student was also injured in the attack.
A shooting with three deaths does not meet most definitions of a mass shooting, though how such a shooting should be defined – and the precise numerical definition of the loss of life required – is sharply contested.
The multiple-victim shooting in an elementary school drew a strong response from local law enforcement, and nationwide media coverage. But the kind of violence that claimed the life of eight-year-old Jonathan Martinez and Elaine Smith, a 53-year-old teacher in a special needs classroom, is a daily occurrence.
Advocates say that nearly 50 American women are shot to death by former or current partners each month – more than one a day, according to national police department statistics.
