Hong Kong: eight tons of illegal ivory seizure largest in 30 years

Nearly eight tons of illegal ivory tusks have been seized in Hong Kong, authorities’ biggest haul in 30 years.

The tusks, which are worth an estimated $9 million (HK$72 million), were found hidden beneath frozen fish cartons aboard a container ship sailing from Malaysia, the Hong Kong Customs office said in a statement.

One man and two women have been arrested and an investigation is ongoing.

The seizure comes months after China outlined a plan to ban the ivory trade completely in 2017.

Hong Kong has long held the reputation as being the “dark heart of the ivory trade,” a port city that’s less regulated and provides a gateway to China.

The sale of ivory is still legal in Hong Kong, with restrictions, but the government plans to phase it out by 2021.

UK police make new arrest over Manchester attack, 11 in custody

British police said on Saturday that they had made a further arrest in connection with last month’s suicide bombing on a concert in Manchester which killed 22 people.

The arrest, which was made in Manchester, took to 11 the number of people being held in custody over the attack, all of them men, the police said.

A further six people who were arrested since the attack on May 22 have been released without charge.

Three dead in Renmark plane crash

THREE people have been killed when their light aircraft crashed near the Renmark Aerodrome in the Riverland.

A SA Police search party found the plane wreckage a few kilometres from the Renmark Aerodrome at 7.10pm on Tuesday.

All three people on board the plane were killed in the crash, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority confirmed.

The plane took off from Renmark Aerodrome on Tuesday afternoon, and the alarm was raised when the plane activated its emergency beacon just after 4.30pm.

Two SA Police helicopters and a Royal Flying Doctor Service plane were dispatched to the area.

Prison Break fan favourite killed off in latest season 5 episode

A character first introduced in the original season of Prison Break was killed off in the reboot’s latest episode.

Both Paul Kellerman (Paul Adelstein) and T-Bag (Robert Knepper) were shot in the fourth episode titled ‘The Prisoner’s Dilemma’ – only as the latter got away with a bullet to the shoulder, while the former Secret Service villain-turned-goodie suffered a blow to the head from Poseidon’s henchman Van Gogh.

Ahead of the fatal shot, Kellerman said: “I was you once, killing for a lie.”

Speaking to EW about the character’s death, Adelstein said: “No-one knows if there’s going to be more Prison Break in general, so while it was disappointing for the character maybe to be dead, it’s a cherry on top to even get to go back and do more, so I try not to be too greedy about it.”

UN fears 200 died in coalition airstrike on Mosul

The UN looks into reports that 200 people, mostly civilians, died in an air strike in the past week.

The United Nations has raised grave concerns about reports of high civilian casualties in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

A senior UN official in Iraq said she was stunned by accounts of “terrible loss of life”, after claims that at least 200 people had been killed in an air strike by the US-led coalition.

US warplanes are supporting the Iraqi Army’s mission to retake Mosul from the Islamic State (IS).

US media reports say an investigation is under way.

It is not known exactly when the deaths are alleged to have happened.

However, reporters in western Mosul’s Jadideh neighbourhood said they saw 50 bodies being pulled out of buildings on Friday, after they were razed in air attacks earlier in March.
