PERTH’S young guns sank the competition in the gruelling “Port to Pub” swim, with two of the 20km winners not yet old enough to drive.
New South Wales man Michael Hanisch had told girlfriend Rachael Elkaim he would remain on the east coast while she took on the 25km course.
But Mr Hanisch – who like his partner earned a Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming last year – had secretly arranged to fly to Perth.
He jumped into the ocean alongside a stunned Ms Elkaim for the final 2km, and then proposed at the finish line.
Ms Elkaim, who accepted, said: “I had no idea.
“When he went down on one knee I thought ‘It’s about time’.”
