St Petersburg metro explosion: At least 11 dead in underground blast in Russia

At least 11 people are killed in an explosion in St Petersburg’s underground metro, Russian authorities say.

A terrorism investigation has begun in Russia after an explosion on a train carriage in St Petersburg’s underground metro killed at least 11 people and injured dozens more.

Key points:

  • No-one has claimed responsibility
  • Authorities are searching for suspects
  • Putin says the motive remains unknown, but terrorism is not being ruled out
  • Security stepped up across Russia

The blast hit a train travelling between two stations in the western city’s centre during mid-afternoon.

Photos of the scene showed a train at a station with its doors blown out, and the dead and injured lying on the platform.

“When we were climbing out of the train carriage — it collapsed, all of it, everything just went black,” one commuter said.
