Sebastian Vettel has admitted he may have ‘chickened on the brakes slightly on the last lap’ after the Ferrari driver was pipped to Chinese Grand Prix pole position by Lewis Hamilton.
Vettel clinched an impressive victory in the season-opener in Melbourne a fortnight ago to send a warning to the British star’s all-conquering Mercedes team.
But Hamilton set a track record to capture his sixth pole position in China, breaking the 13-year-old mark held by Michael Schumacher by more than half a second.
Vettel, however, suggested he could have improved his time but put his foot off the gas a little bit during the closing stages of qualifying.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ‘We will see tomorrow how important being on front row is. If we could have been a bit quicker it would have been even nicer.
‘Maybe I chickened on the brakes slightly on the last lap. It was very close to Valtteri so thankfully we got enough margin to get on the front row.
‘Our car is strong no matter what. I think we can still improve. The conditions will be quite different.’
