New Zealand’s South Island was rocked by a 5.0-magnitude earthquake on Thursday evening. The earthquake struck about 10km east of Seddon, a small town near Blenheim.
It was dubbed an aftershock from a 7.8-magnitude earthquake which struck nearby Kaikoura last November.
‘It’s part of the aftershock sequence and it’s to be expected,’ GNS Science duty seismologist Caroline Little said.
‘The last magnitude-5 aftershock was on March 1, it was much further south though, it was near Cheviot.’
