The Sydney Cup 2017 was sensationally declared a no-race after two jockeys were dislodged and James Doyle’s horse Almoonqith was put down following a horror fall at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Six-year-old mare Almoonqith was involved in a collision mid-race and lay motionless on the ground in front of a horrified crowd after two riders were dislodged.
Jockey Blake Shinn and Almoonqith’s rider James Doyle were still on the ground at Royal Randwick Racecourse when the stewards made the controversial decision to call it a no-race.
But at least half the other jockeys were still romping the field at Randwick, unaware that the $2million race had been called off, reports Racing.com.
Doyle – who suffered a knee injury – struggled to crawl off the track with the help of fellow jockey Shinn.
With two riders still on the track and Almoonqith situated near the winning post, officials decided to call the race off for safety reasons.
The official starter was made to scream at the remaining jockeys to alert their attention to the shocking incident.
