Billions star asks the Emmys to reconsider their ‘actor or actress’ categories and decides to compete as an ‘actor’

Asia Kate Dillon, the breakout star of the hit Showtime series Billions, has so impressed viewers and critics that there is already buzz about a possible Emmy Award nomination.

But for Asia Kate Dillon, who self-identifies as gender non-binary in real life and also plays one on the show, there was question as to which award category would be most suitable.

Would Dillon, who was born legally a female, be classified as an actor or an actress?

Showtime approached Dillon about the issue, and Dillon got to thinking, according to Variety.

‘What I learned through my research is that the word “actor”, specifically in reference to those who performed in plays, came about in the late 1500s as a non-gendered word,’ says Dillon
