Firefighters say that the explosion was a manhole blast and that three manholes are on fire, according to scanner activity.
The explosion occurred around 8am, at the intersection of Broadway and East 12th Street – near the landmark bookstore, The Strand.
Firefighters are on scene and so are trucks for ConEdison, the city’s gas provider.
12th Street has been closed from 4th Avenue to Broadway.
