NEW YORK (Reuters) – Russian teenager Andrey Rublev tamed ninth seed David Goffin 7-5 7-6(5) 6-3 on Monday to become the youngest man to reach the U.S. Open quarter-finals since Andy Roddick in 2001.

Although Rublev betrayed his young age with a couple of outbursts, it was nonetheless a mature performance from the 19-year-old as he set up an intriguing last-eight showdown with world number one Rafa Nadal.

“Rafa is the real champion and I am going to just try and enjoy it,” said Rublev, looking ahead to facing one of his childhood idols. “This is the quarter-finals I have nothing to lose.”

While 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov was becoming the darling of this year’s U.S. Open, playing on Arthur Ashe Stadium to adoring crowds, it is the hardworking Rublev who is the last teenager standing.

Brazil: 10 dead, Dozens Missing After Boat Sinks on River

(RIO DE JANEIRO) — A boat carrying 70 people sank on a major river in northern Brazil leaving at least 10 dead and dozens missing, authorities said Wednesday.

The public security office of the state of Para said 15 people made it to the shore and 10 bodies were recovered, while the rest were unaccounted for. Earlier the office had reported that 25 reached the shore…

Authorities said the boat was traveling on the Xingu River when it sank late Tuesday. The cause was not immediately clear.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper said the vessel left Monday night from Santarem and was heading to Vitoria do Xingu.

Survivor Bruno Costa, a 29 year-old disc jockey, described a chaotic scene as the boat cracked apart and quickly sank. He told the G1 news portal that a tarpaulin sheltering passengers from a heavy downpour made it escape difficult.

“The tarp prevented many people from leaving. I managed to rescue a child of about 2, but neither I nor the child had a life jacket on,” Costa said.

Air bag maker Takata files for bankruptcy in Japan, US

Takata’s troubles stem from use of the explosive chemical ammonium nitrate in the inflators to deploy air bags in a crash. The chemical can deteriorate when exposed to hot and humid air and burn too fast, blowing apart a metal canister.

Japanese air bag maker Takata Corp. has filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo and the U.S., overwhelmed by lawsuits and recall costs related to its production of faulty air bag inflators that are linked to the death of at least 16 people.

The company announced the expected action Monday morning Tokyo time. Takata confirmed that most of its assets will be bought by rival Key Safety Systems, based in suburban Detroit. Key will pay about $1.6 billion (175 billion yen), according to an announcement by the two companies.

Takata’s defective inflators can explode with too much force when they fill up an air bag, spewing out shrapnel. Besides the fatalities, they’re also responsible for at least 180 injuries, and touched off the largest automotive recall in U.S. history. So far 100 million inflators have been recalled worldwide including 69 million in the U.S., affecting 42 million vehicles.

Under the agreement with Key, Takata’s manufacturing of inflators will be kept separate in order to keep manufacturing inflators used as replacement parts in recalls. The recalls, which are being handled by 19 affected automakers, will continue.

Key also said it won’t cut any Takata jobs or close any of Takata’s facilities.

At the end of April, only 22 percent of the 69 million recalled inflators in the U.S. had been replaced under the recalls, leaving almost 54 million on the roads, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. This means more inflators will likely explode and more people will be hurt in the future, lawyers say.

Rex Tillerson signs declaration stressing climate change threat

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson signed an international declaration highlighting the importance of the Paris Agreement in tackling climate change Thursday, even as the Trump administration considers withdrawing from the agreement.

The Fairbanks Declaration was adopted at the meeting by the members of the Arctic Council, which includes countries with territory in the Arctic such as the United States. It states that “the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of the global average, resulting in widespread social, environmental, and economic impacts in the Arctic and worldwide,” and points to “the pressing and increasing need for mitigation and adaptation actions and to strengthen resilience.”

The declaration further recognizes “the need for global action to reduce both long-lived greenhouse gases and short-lived climate pollutants.”

But even as Tillerson — who chaired the council meeting — approved the measure, his boss Donald Trump is weighing whether to abandon the landmark Paris Agreement, which requires participating countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Sources told CNN that Trump is increasingly unsure how withdrawing from the Paris climate accord would affect the United States, both legally and in its dealings with foreign leaders — several whom are actively lobbying the administration to stay in the deal.

He initially planned to make a final decision on the agreement before attending the G7 summit later this month, but postponed that deadline at Tillerson’s request, a White House official told CNN earlier this week.

In his opening remarks at the Arctic Council meeting on Thursday, Tillerson acknowledged the US government is “currently reviewing several important policies, including how the Trump administration will approach the issue of climate change,” but insisted the administration would not “rush” to decide.

“We are appreciative that each of you has an important point of view,” he said. “And you should know that we are taking the time to understand your concerns.”

A State Department official downplayed the significance of the administration’s decision to sign the Fairbanks Declaration.

Woman Fighting For Life After Being ‘Set On Fire’ By Fiance

Tasmanian woman Nicole Evans will undergo surgery on Thursday followed by “many months” of treatment and rehabilitation after her fiance allegedly set her on fire in a backyard shed in Hobart.

Matthew John Davey allegedly doused Evans with an accelerant and then set her alight following a domestic dispute in the northern Hobart suburb of Chigwell, Tasmania Police said.

The 20-year-old remains in an induced coma at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where she was airlifted from Hobart on Tuesday. She has suffered burns to more than 50 per cent of her body and health professionals said on Wednesday they held “grave concerns” for her life.

Davey has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and three charges of assault.

He appeared in court on Wednesday with his hands heavily bandaged, the ABC reports, having also received treatment for burns while under police guard at Royal Hobart Hospital following the ANZAC Day incident.

Tasmania Police said there was a history of family violence, but there were no family violence orders in place at the time of the assault.

Detectives, forensic police, forensic scientists and Tasmania Fire Service Scene Examiners have combed over the “outbuilding” where the fire took place and will present evidence in court.

A friend of the young woman, Sheena Mclean, has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money towards Evans’ medical care.

She describes Evans as “a precious daughter, a sister, an aunt and my beautiful soul of a friend”…
