Climate change plan B: dimming the sun
SOLAR RADIATION MANAGEMENT
The goal is simple: prevent some of the sun’s rays from hitting the planet’s surface, forcing them instead back up into space.
One idea worthy of a Star Wars sequel would assemble giant orbiting mirrors to deflect a bit of Earth-bound radiation.
A more feasible scheme — experiments are scheduled for next fall in Arizona — would inject tiny reflective particles into the stratosphere.
Nature sometimes does the same: Debris from the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines lowered the planet’s average surface temperature for a year or two afterwards.

#F1: Daniel Ricciardo discusses Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel condition for move from Red Bull
DANIEL Ricciardo insists he would not join Ferrari if it meant playing second fiddle to Sebastian Vettel.
Ricciardo is under contract at Red Bull until the end of 2018 but has been tipped for a Ferrari seat once Kimi Raikkonen departs, in a move that would see him partner Vettel for the second time.
He dominated the four-time world champion three years ago, but Vettel has since established himself as Ferrari’s number one driver, with Kimi Raikkonen playing a supporting role.
And that is a situation Ricciardo would simply not accept, claiming he would never be the “bridesmaid” after establishing himself in Formula 1.

Six professional wingsuit jumpers experienced the total solar eclipse from midair 14,000 feet above Madras, Ore. on Monday — a stunt they say is the first of its kind.
Video captured by OutsideTV shows them jumping at 10:18 a.m. local time — 30 seconds before the eclipse reached totality. They traveled at a speed of 150 miles per hour through a darkening sky, as the eclipse progressed.
“This jump will be remembered forever and will go down in the record books,” one of the jumpers wrote in an Instagram post, calling it an “intense moment.”
The “Great American Eclipse” began in Oregon on Monday, following a path of totality that concluded about 90 minutes later in Columbia, S.C.

Mum, daughter die after a horrific car crash in Melbourne’s southeast
A MOTHER and daughter leaving parent teacher interviews have died and a man taken to hospital with serious injuries after a horrific car crash in Melbourne’s southeast.
Police say the car the mother and daughter were in was leaving a church carpark on the South Gippsland Highway near Devon Rd when it was hit by a silver Holden Commodore about 7.20pm.
The mother believed to be aged in her 40s and her teenage daughter, died at the scene.

Two Melbourne men charged with slavery and possessing child exploitation material
The human trafficking charges came after Australian Federal Police officers raided a home in Melbourne on June 19.
A 33-year-old man and a 31-year-old man were subsequently charged with possessing child exploitation material and bailed to appear in court.
In court on Friday, further charges relating to human trafficking were laid.
The 33-year-old was charged with facilitating the entry of another person into Australia, deceiving that person with regard to their exploitation in Australia.
Both men were additionally charged with slavery, which carries a jail sentence of up to 25 years.
The pair were bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on October 12.
Police did not provide any further details, including when the offences were allegedly committed.
According to the AFP, Australia is primarily a destination for people trafficked from Asia, particularly Thailand, Korea, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Comey Told Sessions: Don’t Leave Me Alone With Trump
The day after President Trump asked James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director, to end an investigation into his former national security adviser, Mr. Comey confronted Attorney General Jeff Sessions and said he did not want to be left alone again with the president, according to current and former law enforcement officials.
Mr. Comey believed Mr. Sessions should protect the F.B.I. from White House influence, the officials said, and pulled him aside after a meeting in February to tell him that private interactions between the F.B.I. director and the president were inappropriate. But Mr. Sessions could not guarantee that the president would not try to talk to Mr. Comey alone again, the officials said.
Mr. Comey did not reveal, however, what had so unnerved him about his Oval Office meeting with the president: Mr. Trump’s request that the F.B.I. director end the investigation into the former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, who had just been fired. By the time Mr. Trump fired Mr. Comey last month, Mr. Comey had disclosed the meeting to a few of his closest advisers but nobody at the Justice Department, according to the officials, who did not want to be identified discussing Mr. Comey’s interactions with Mr. Trump and Mr. Sessions.

Hepatitis A scare prompts Creative Gourmet to recall frozen berries
The maker of Creative Gourmet mixed berries has recalled a “relatively small batch” of its 300g product sold in independent supermarkets across Australia as a precaution after it was linked to three cases of hepatitis A.
The recall comes two years on from a national outbreak of the virus among people who consumed frozen berries.
Entyce Food Ingredients said it was notified by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) that one unopened pack had registered an inconclusive test for the virus.
The company had earlier said the packet had tested positive to traces of hepatitis A.
A second test was negative but the product was voluntarily recalled as a precaution.

Schapelle Corby fearful of gathering media as brother emerges from Bali villa in mask
Schapelle Corby has told Indonesian authorities of being terrified by growing media attention ahead of her deportation next week.
Corby is living in a Bali villa with her brother Michael, who now wears a mask whenever he leaves the house.
The head of Bali’s prison division said parole officials will monitor the security around Corby’s Kuta home until she is sent back to Australia on May 27.
Surung Pasaribu met Corby inside the villa last night after her sister Mercedes told him her sister was unwell.
“Corby’s sister told us that Corby is scared to go out [of her] house,” Mr Surung told the ABC.
“She’s stressed, it’s getting worse.”
Mr Surung said it was “our job to monitor her” and that Corby was “very afraid to meet people”, according to her sister.
He said Corby was lying down with her face hidden behind a sarong when he arrived at the villa.
“She opened it to show her face a bit and then she covered it back. She said, ‘I am very afraid’,” he said.
“That’s all she expressed to me, ‘I feel afraid, to meet many people, including the media people.
“She said to me that outside her house cameras were installed to watch her — that’s scared her.”
Corby’s security being monitored
Mercedes Corby is also in Bali to bring her sister home. Schapelle Corby is being deported exactly 12 years after she was convicted for bringing more than four kilograms of marijuana into Bali.
Mercedes told Mr Surung that Schapelle is so stressed by the attention of photographers and camera operators that she is staying in her room and does not want to go outside.
“She doesn’t know who has been chasing her or who has been trying to interview her,” Mr Surung said.
“We’ve listened to her complaints and our office will take taking the necessary steps to monitor the security until the end of her parole period.”

Facing calamity at the scary 18th hole after shanking his mid-iron second shot into a palmetto bush, Poulter dropped out under penalty. Hundreds of thousands of dollars and scores of precious world ranking points were disappearing before his eyes.
From trying to chase down the nerveless 21 year old Korean Si Woo Kim, Poulter was now in danger of undoing so much of his earlier good work.
It was at this point Poulter summoned up the Ryder Cup warrior within. He played the 90 yard shot so well it carried over the trees in front of him and finished inches from the hole for as good a bogey five as you’ll ever see.
It gave him a share of second place with South African Louis Oosthuizen and emphatically takes care of business in terms of keeping his PGA Tour card for next year. On Monday morning, he can look forward to a leap of more than 100 places in the world rankings from his present placing of 197th.
‘It feels great to be back, and particularly following one of the worst shots you’ll ever see with a pretty good one,’ said Poulter, referring to his miraculous escape at the last.
As for the victor, Kim became the youngest winner of this flagship PGA Tour event in terrific fashion, shooting a last round 69 to win by three. Everyone else in the field had at least two bogeys while he had none.

Astronaut Peggy Whitson breaks US space record, gets call from Donald Trump )
The International Space Station’s commander surpassed the record of 534 days, two hours and 48 minutes for most accumulated time in space by an American.
“This is a very special day in the glorious history of American spaceflight,” Mr Trump said.
Ms Whitson said it was “a huge honour” to break such a record.
She said “it’s an exciting time” as NASA prepares for human expeditions to Mars in the 2030s, included in new legislation signed by Mr Trump last month.
She called the space station “a key bridge” between living on Earth and traveling into deep space, and she singled out the station’s recycling system that transforms astronauts’ urine into drinking water.
“It’s really not as bad as it sounds,” she assured the President.
“Well, that’s good, I’m glad to hear that,” he replied. “Better you than me.”
Ms Whitson was already the world’s most experienced spacewoman and female spacewalker and, at 57, the oldest woman in space.
By the time she returns to Earth in September, she will have logged 666 days in orbit over three flights.
The world record — 879 days — is held by Russian Gennady Padalka.
