Turnbull Government’s plan to amend 18C race law defeated

The Turnbull government has suffered a defeat in the Senate of its plans to water down the Racial Discrimination Act. Labor and the Greens voted against plans to amend section 18C.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull last week announced plans to remove the words ‘offend’, ‘insult’ and ‘humiliate’ from the law so it would only be an offence to ‘harass or ‘intimidate’ people on the basis of their race.

However, his legislation was voted down in the Senate on Thursday night with Labor, the Greens, Nick Xenophon’s senators and independent Jacqui Lambie.
