Tour de France 2017: Froome claims fourth title, Aussie Michael Matthews wins green jersey

Chris Froome has put on a near-perfect performance to claim his fourth Tour de France and move within one title of cycling’s greatest.

The Briton suffered a few hiccups but was always in control over the three-week race thanks to his team mates who sheltered him when it mattered, leaving the lanky rider to make the difference in the time trials.

But there was glory for Australia as Team Sunweb rider Michael Matthews’s versatility earned him the green jersey for the points classification, helped by the fact that world champion Peter Sagan was kicked out of the race after elbowing Mark Cavendish in a sprint finish.

Matthews was confirmed as the third Australian to win the green jersey, having effectively secured the gong in the 19th stage, provided he finished the race.

The 26-year-old deposed Sagan, the winner of the past five green jerseys, after winning stage 14 in Rodez and the 16th stage in Romans-sur-Isere, building up a huge lead over German rider Andre Greipel.

“It’s really a dream come true to stand there with the green jersey,” Matthews said, whose French team-mate Warren Barguil clinched the polka dot jersey as king of the mountains.

“It’s been a rollercoaster with a lot of highs and lows. The second week was when mine and Warren’s dreams started to come true.

“We more or less took it in turns with the wins and continued the momentum together, along with the rest of the team.

Alleged killing of Afghan boys by elite Australian soldiers under investigation

A secretive inquiry into the conduct of Australian special forces in Afghanistan is examining allegations that soldiers covered up the killing of an Afghan child.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has confirmed to the ABC it is also considering whether to launch a full investigation into at least one of the incidents, in which the shooting of a boy in Kandahar Province in 2012 was allegedly covered up by soldiers.

A source with knowledge of that incident told the ABC that Australian special forces soldiers were moving through the remote area during the early hours of the morning when they shot a boy dead, then left his body where it lay.

The ABC’s source alleges Khan Mohammed’s death was covered up by Australian soldiers.

It was later found by local villagers and retrieved by his family.

The source said there was no obvious insurgent activity in the area at the time, and the patrol had not been fired on prior to the boy’s death

Colombia landslide kills more than 150, injures dozens

A landslide in Colombia’s Putumayo province sends mud and debris crashing onto houses, killing at least 154 people and injuring scores.

Heavy rains caused several rivers to overflow, pushing sediment onto buildings and roads in the provincial capital of Mocoa.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos flew to Mocoa, which has a population of 345,000, to oversee rescue efforts on the city outskirts and speak with affected families.

WA One Nation candidates disendorsed by party for failing to ‘reach standards’

One Nation has officially disendorsed two of its candidates for failing to reach required standards, just a fortnight out from the March poll, in what a political analyst has described as a rare move.

Candidates for the rural Lower House seat of North West Central, Dane Sorensen, and southern Perth seat of Thornlie, Sandy Baraiolo, have been removed from One Nation’s online candidates’ list.

State leader Colin Tincknell told the ABC the party had “no choice” but to cast out their former candidates.

“Both those candidates didn’t reach the standards that we need, so we had no choice but to disendorse them,” he said.

“I think both of them would’ve liked to have continued, but like I said we have a set of standards that all the other 50 candidates were fitting into.

“Unfortunately these two weren’t able to do that so Pauline Hanson made the decision to disendorse them.”

Three women and boy, 5, shot dead in Mississippi home
