3 Australian Crown Resorts employees sentenced
SHANGHAI (AP) — The Latest on the criminal trial of Australian and Chinese casino workers in a Chinese court (all times local):
1:30 p.m.
An Australian official says Australian and Chinese employees of a casino company have pleaded guilty to charges relating to gambling in a Chinese court and that the three Australians have been sentenced to nine and 10 months’ imprisonment.
The 19 employees of Australia’s Crown Resorts Ltd. stood trial at a court in Shanghai on Monday.
Australian Consul General in Shanghai Graeme Meehan says Jason O’Connor, the head of Australia’s Crown Resorts international VIP programs, was sentenced to 10 months in prison. He says Jerry Xuan and Jenny Pan received sentences of nine months’ imprisonment.
Meehan said outside court that the sentences start from the date they were detained, which was Oct. 14.
Casino gambling and the promoting of gambling are illegal in mainland China.

UPDATE Portugal: 25 people killed in forest fires northeast of Lisbon
Public broadcaster RTP says another 20 have been injured, including six firefighters
A huge forest fire in central Portugal killed at least 25 people and injured 20 others, most of them burning to death in their cars, the government said on Sunday.
Several hundred firefighters and 160 vehicles were dispatched late on Saturday to tackle the blaze, which broke out in the afternoon in the municipality of Pedrogao Grande before spreading fast across several fronts.
“Unfortunately this seems to be the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires,” the visibly moved prime minister Antonio Costa said.
“The number of fatalities could still rise,” he said at the Civil Protection headquarters near Lisbon. “The priority now is to save those people who could still be in danger.”
Portugal was sweltering under a severe heatwave on Saturday, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in several regions.
Around 60 forest fires broke out across the country during the night, with 1,700 firefighters battling to put them out…

The Halycon axed after just one series despite being billed as Downton Abbey’s replacement
IT was billed as the new period drama to replace Downton Abbey. But I can reveal The Halcyon has been axed just weeks after its first series finished.
ITV bosses have decided to not make a second series of the World War Two hotel thriller after fewer than four million people tuned into its finale last month.
A source said: “It’s a shame The Halcyon hasn’t been given a second series because it had a loyal set of fans who really enjoyed it.
“Being compared to Downton Abbey is a tough act to live up to — especially after the huge success Downton had in the US.
