Arizona ‘paper Editorial: Joe Arpaio Pardon Shows Institutional Racism Is Trump’s Goal

“The pardon was a slap to those who worked through the judicial system to make Arpaio accountable.”

The editorial board of the Arizona Republic blasted President Donald Trump for pardoning Joe Arpaio, the former Maricopa County, Arizona, sheriff who was found guilty of contempt after profiling Latinos.

Trump on Friday pardoned Arpaio, who notoriously detained inmates under brutal and inhumane conditions. The 85-year-old sheriff was found guilty in July of ignoring a court order prohibiting him from detaining people based solely on suspicions about their immigration status.

The Arizona Republic’s editorial board said Trump’s pardon showed the president entirely accepted institutional racism.

“By pardoning Arpaio, Trump made it clear that institutional racism is not just OK with him. It is a goal,” the board wrote. The pardon, they wrote “elevates Arpaio once again to the pantheon of those who see institutional racism as something that made America great.”

The board wrote that a pardon for Arpaio wasn’t just insulting to Latinos, but to all.

“The pardon was a slap to those who worked through the judicial system to make Arpaio accountable, too. It robbed the people hurt by his policies of justice – even before a judge could mete out a sentence,” it said. “The pardon was a sign of pure contempt for every American who believes in justice, human dignity and the rule of law.”

Point-to-point speed cameras will go live, millions of dollars in fines each year

POINT-to POINT speed cameras will go live on Forrest Highway from September 6, with millions of dollars in fines each year expected to be generated by the technology.

Extensive testing of the cameras began last October and found almost one-third of 500,000 drivers monitored over three months were speeding.

About 10 per cent of them — 16,500 — were speeding by more than 10km/h.

Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts said yesterday an advertising blitz would be held before the cameras were turned on to warn drivers to think about their speed.

“This education campaign, which will include TV, radio, digital ads and billboards, begins two weeks prior to enforcement and gives drivers plenty of notice if they speed on the Forrest Highway they will be caught,” Mrs Roberts said.

The cameras are on both sides of a 27km stretch between Lake Clifton and Binningup.

They capture the registration details and times that vehicles enter and leave the zone.

The data is used to calculate the vehicle’s average speed.

The cameras can detect if a car is speeding when it enters or leaves the zone and infringements can be issued regardless of the average speed.

“The McGowan Government is committed to reducing road trauma on WA roads, and speed is a significant factor in fatal and serious injury crashes,” Mrs Roberts said.

“The average speed safety camera zone on Forrest Highway is an effective way to slow drivers down and ultimately save Western Aust- ralian lives.”

Mrs Roberts said Forrest Highway had been selected for the first point-to-point cameras because of the high number of fatal and serious crashes.

Between 2009 and 2016 there were 183 crashes in the 27km covered by the cameras.

Security guard is accused of stealing $100,000 … on his first day at work

A New Jersey security guard’s first day on the job was also his last after he allegedly stole $100,000 out of his own company’s armored truck.

The Fairfield Police Department said Larry Brooks was caught on security camera stealing $100,000 in cash from a truck belonging to Garda, an armored car company for which he’d just started working.

Garda security officers recovered $85,900 of the money from a car the next day. It’s not known what happened to the rest of the money.

Police charged Brooks with second degree theft. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office told CNN, as of Tuesday afternoon, it did not appear Brooks had retained representation.

CNN has reached out to Garda for comment but hasn’t heard back.

Recycling plant fire broke out hours before planned inspection at Coolaroo

Inspection was scheduled at plant on the same morning fire broke out.

Authorities claim they were poised to act over fire safety concerns at the Coolaroo recycling plant only hours before a massive new blaze broke out at the facility.

It can also be revealed that the facility’s operator is facing court after a worker lost a hand in an incident in 2014.

The Environment Protection Authority is concerned about the Coolaroo site and others like it due to the risk they pose to the community if not properly managed.

The EPA was expected to draft notices demanding operators SKM Services take action to reduce fire risks after an inspection planned for 10am on Thursday…

Report Reveals The Grubby Tactics In Australia’s Failed 2022 World Cup Bid

‘There is strong evidence that Australia made improper payments.’

Was Australia’s 2022 FIFA World Cup bid dirty? That’s pretty much what a FIFA report says, with allegations that the Football Federation Australia (FFA) made “improper payments intended to influence the vote of an Executive Committee member”.

This and many other allegations are all tabled in the full, unedited 400 page report into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process (the Cups were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively and announced at the same time.)

The report, by FIFA Ethics Chief Investigator Michael Garcia, was originally leaked to German tabloid Bild. It appears FIFA then decided to outflank Bild by sticking the report on its own wesbite, where the whole world can read it in full.

News sites in the U.K. are leading with the alleged involvement of Prince William and former PM David Cameron in vote-swapping, a practice which contravene’s FIFA’s anti-collusion rules.

But some of the tactics in Australia’s failed 2022 World Cup bid — for which we received just one miserable vote despite spending $45.6 million and creating the weird kangaroo video below — are just as hard to swallow…

Blinding dust on New Mexico highway kills 6

LORDSBURG, N.M. (AP) —

Six people died in a 25-vehicle pileup caused by a sudden dust storm along an interstate highway in New Mexico where such conditions have caused deadly collisions in the past, authorities said.

Those killed in the incident Monday near the Arizona border were a 9-month-old girl and her parents from Phoenix, two people from El Paso, Texas, and a California woman.

The high winds and limited visibility caused 18 commercial trucks and seven passenger cars to crash on westbound Interstate 10.

The stretch of highway near rural Lordsburg has seen other deadly crashes and closures due to similar conditions stemming from the desert landscape and a dry lakebed.

“It’s a topographical area in which the winds come through where there’s nothing that can be done to prevent it,” state police spokesman Carl Christiansen said.

In February, two women were killed when their car got sandwiched between two semi-trucks in a dust storm.

Christiansen said the state has aired public service announcements and posted signs that span 100 miles (160 kilometers), warning drivers about sudden winds.

Drivers are advised to pull over when visibility is low and to wait until the dust settles to resume driving.

In May 2014, seven people died when a driver suddenly hit the brakes as blowing dust shrouded visibility. A 9-year-old girl was among the dead in the chain reaction crash that followed.

Ariana Grande has paid tribute to the victims who died at her Manchester concert with an all-star affair in the city with the help of Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Liam Gallagher and others.

Sunday’s One Love Manchester concert, held at the city’s Old Trafford cricket ground, also featured Coldplay, Pharrell Williams, Take That, Imogen Heap, Robbie Williams, Marcus Mumford, Niall Horan and Little Mix.

Gallagher and Take That hail from Manchester.

Grande sang multiple times throughout the three-hour-plus show, even duetting with Miley Cyrus, the Black Eyed Peas, Mac Miller and the Parrs Wood High School Choir, one of the show’s strongest moments.

The concert raised money for victims and those injured in the suicide bombing that struck at Grande’s May 22 show. Twenty-two people were killed and dozens more were injured.8:45 p.m.

Grande emerged onstage for the One Love Manchester concert Sunday. She appeared teary-eyed and emotional as she performed her hits “Be Alright” and “Break Free.”

She told the audience, “Manchester, we’re gonna be all right.”

Before her performance, she and her dancers held hands in solidarity.

Sunday’s concert will raise money for victims of the attack that struck at Grande’s show on May 22. The show is broadcasting across the globe and proceeds will go to an emergency fund set up by the city of Manchester and the British Red Cross.

Android founder Andy Rubin unveils $699 ‘Essential’ smartphone

Rubin and his new company Essential Products unveiled a $699 Android smartphone called the Essential phone.

The Essential has an edge-to-edge display that covers almost the entire front of the device. It also boasts the world’s thinnest dual camera system “ever built for a phone,” according to its website.

But it’s a pair of dots on the side that set the phone apart. They’re magnetic connectors that create a dock, designed to snap on and off various accessories. It’s a concept called a “modular” phone that allows for swappable hardware pieces.

The new phone was first reported by The Verge and Wired. Rubin will speak at Recode’s Code Conference on Tuesday night.

Indianapolis 500: Scott Dixon crash – driver survives wreck

POLE sitter Scott Dixon was knocked out of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday by a terrifying crash that saw his car fly over the car of Jay Howard and land atop the inside safety fence, where it split in two amid sparks and flames.

Dixon’s car was shredded by the retaining wall, but the tub of the car remained intact and the 2008 champion was able to climb out on his own to a roar from the crowd. He walked to a waiting ambulance while the race was placed under red flag and crews began to clean up debris scattered over hundreds of feet.

Howard also was checked at the infield car centre and released.

That impact sent Howard across the track, where Dixon had nowhere to go.

“We were just out there trying to pick up some laps and Hunter-Reay got a run on me,” Howard said. “I lifted, trying to be a nice guy. He comes right over on me and the rest is happy.”

Dixon’s car went airborne and flipped over before landing on the retaining barrier, where the impact punched a hole in the safety fencing. A photographer who was positioned at that point on the track ducked just in time as the car came apart; he was checked by safety crews and was OK.

Helio Castroneves was following them and barely escaped the carnage.

“It’s tough,” Dixon said. “You make those decisions, which way to go. You’re hoping Jay is going to stay against the wall. I already had picked that way to go.

Greenland’s Coastal Ice Caps Have Melted Past The Point Of No Return

Coastal ice has passed a critical “tipping point,” a new study shows. And it doesn’t bode well for the rest of the island’s ice.

Even as President Donald Trump and his administration continue to deny the urgency of climate change, an international team of researchers has revealed how global warming has already melted Greenland’s coastal glaciers and ice caps past the point of no return.

In a study published in Nature Communications on Friday, scientists based in Europe and the U.S. describe how the glaciers and ice caps that cover tens of thousands of square miles along the coast of Greenland have reached a critical “tipping point,” beyond which further melting is unavoidable.

Troublingly, the ice had already surpassed this tipping point 20 years ago, the researchers said — only the technology to confirm this hadn’t existed until now.

“These peripheral glaciers and ice caps can be thought of as colonies of ice that are in rapid decline, many of which will likely disappear in the near future,” said Ian Howat, study co-author and glaciologist at Ohio State University, in a statement last week. “In that sense, you could say that they’re ‘doomed.’”

Airlines attendant gets kidney from her pilot

A flight attendant with chronic kidney disease will get a life-saving kidney transplant donation from her pilot.

Jenny Stansel, 38, has battled chronic kidney disease for nearly 15 years but after the Alaska Airlines stewardess had to stop working on one of her flights last March, she learned she desperately needed a transplant.

After Stansel publicly asked friends and co-workers to consider donating, Captain Jodi Harskamp stepped up and agreed to give her friend the life-saving organ.

Stansel and Harskamp, both based in Anchorage, Alaska, have traveled to Seattle for the five-hour surgery scheduled for March 13.
