U.S. Navy ship collided with a merchant vessel. 7 reportedly missing

Seven personnel are reportedly missing after a US destroyer collided with a Japanese fishing vessel.

Japanese broadcaster NHK says one person is injured and seven others are reportedly unaccounted for after a U.S. Navy ship collided with a merchant vessel in waters off Japan.

Footage on Saturday morning showed a person in a stretcher being taken up to a helicopter from the deck of the USS Fitzgerald.

In a statement, the Navy said the USS Fitzgerald collided with a merchant vessel 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka.

The US 7th fleet said the destroyer had ‘experienced flooding in some spaces’ but there were ‘no reports of casualties at this time’.
