Niki Lauda – Max Verstappen decision was the worst I’ve ever seen in #F1

AUSTIN — Mercedes chairman Niki Lauda has labelled the decision to penalise Max Verstappen at the U.S. Grand Prix as the worst ruling he has ever seen in Formula One.

Verstappen was hit with a five-second time penalty after he passed Kimi Raikkonen for third position by cutting the inside of Turn 16 on the final lap. The move looked spectacular as he put Raikkonen out of position in Turn 15 and then completed the move on the inside at Turn 16, but under a strict interpretation of the regulations it was ajudged to have broken them.

The stewards’ decision was made just moments after the race and saw Verstappen pulled out of the green room ahead of the podium ceremonies to be replaced by Raikkonen. Steward interference has been a controversial topic in Formula One in recent years and Lauda said the decision in Austin went against everything the sport had agreed ahead of the season…

Arrested drug lord linked to #Perth crime figures

A GLOBAL organised crime target wanted in Perth over a $40 million drug shipment has been arrested near his heavily guarded hilltop home in Eastern Europe.

Vaso Ulic, 58, became well known to WA Police because of his connections to Perth crime figures, including Fabian Quaid and Troy Mercanti.

Quaid is serving a 17-year jail sentence for his role in trafficking 44kg of ecstasy through Fremantle Port — a 2008 drug conspiracy in which Ulic was the coordinator, according to Supreme Court documents.

Since 2014, prosecutors in Ulic’s supposed safe haven of Montenegro have had a detailed brief from the Australian Federal Police which includes a dozen files about the former Sydneycrime figure. Yesterday, the country’s Directorate for Drugs and Smuggling joined with the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Organised Crime and raided Ulic’s home just outside the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica after arresting him at a nearby shopping centre.

It is alleged that the Albanian-born Ulic, who is a dual Australian-Montenegrin national, has been behind one of the world’s largest drug cartels and money laundering operations.

In 2010,the extent of his Perth connections were revealed and how Quaid, Mercanti and others travelled to Montenegro in 2002 to attend Ulic’s daughter’s wedding.

Westworld Season 2 Trailer: Comic Con

HBO has revealed the first footage from the second season of sci-fi thriller Westworld. The video released at the show’s Comic-Con panel on Saturday is a violent and action-packed tease showing the return of Ed Harris’ Man in Black, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) gunning down guests while riding her horse, and Bernard looking at a dead tiger,

Westworld just started production on season 2 earlier this month, so the footage is from the first week of filming.

“My perception of reality has shifted significantly since I started doing this,” showrunner Jonathan Nolan told Comic-Con at the show’s panel. “I’ve convinced we must be in a simulation of some kind. I just did a tequila shot with Ed Harris in a parking garage at Comic-Con.”

More tidbits from the panel:

— Jeffrey Wright on learning Bernard was a host: “I didn’t appreciate at that time what it meant, but going through the course of the season and into this season I’m starting to understand the opportunity there as an actor and existential metaphor.”

House Of Cards Has Collapsed, And It’s Partly Our Fault

It should have finished after season four, but we begged for more.

It’s only a TV show, but we have loved it passionately, and we waited long and hard for the latest instalment. There’s no easy way to say this, but here it is: ‘House of Cards’ season 5 is a dog.

If you haven’t watched it yet, don’t worry, I’m not about to spoil it for you (the series creators have done a perfectly good job of that all by themselves). But to save yourself heartbreak, you should know up front that the House of Cards has finally collapsed, just as its name suggests.

The stylish, subtle political thriller that obsessed us for four seasons has become, in its fifth, a parody of itself. The plot — always verging on unbelievable — has become preposterous. Frank and Claire Underwood have gone from power-hungry schemers (plausible enough) to US President and Vice-President (stretching credibility here) to a pair of psychopaths on a killing spree.

In one of the more ludicrous scenes, Frank pushes a major character down the stairs outside the Oval Office to delay an investigation into his activities. With all those Southern accents, all you can think of is Scarlett O’Hara tumbling down the staircase in ‘Gone With the Wind’…

The man who built his plane using YouTube videos

For three years, car mechanic Paen Long stayed up long after his wife went to bed each night, spending countless hours watching videos on YouTube.

But these weren’t the viral clips or pop music videos that most people while away hours on. Mr Long, who lives on the side of a highway in Cambodia’s rural south-east, had a singular obsession: aeroplanes.

“In the beginning, I typed in the word ‘jet’,” he says. From there, he was led to videos that showed planes taking off and landing, flight simulations, and virtual tours of factories that produce aircraft.

Paen Long's planeOne of six children of rice farmers, Mr Long grew up in the years when Cambodia was struggling to recover from the devastation caused by the Khmer Rouge and had never been in an aircraft of any kind.

After seeing a helicopter when he was about six years old, he says, the urge to fly preoccupied his mind – for decades. “I always dreamt about aircraft every night. I always wanted to have my own plane,” he says…

Takuma Sato wins Indy 500 as engine failure ends Fernando Alonso’s race

Takuma Sato has won the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 after a dramatic race at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 40-year-old Japanese driver came through in the last few laps of the race to take victory over Hélio Castroneves in second.

Sato, a former Formula One driver, had only won one IndyCar race previously since joining the series in 2010. He had come close to winning the race in 2012, however, when he crashed out on the final lap as he battled Dario Franchitti for the lead. This time he held his nerve to give Andretti Autosport its third victory in four years at the Brickyard and shouted “Awesome!” into his radio as his win was confirmed. Ed Jones, Max Chilton and Tony Kanaan finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Much of the pre-race attention had been on Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula One world champion who was competing as a 35-year-old rookie at the Indy 500. He held the lead several times before his engine blew with fewer than 25 laps of the 200-lap race to go. Up to that point the Spaniard had driven brilliantly, and was given an ovation by the fans as his day ended…

Gripping new drama reveals the tumultuous life of Einstein – Geoffrey Rush stars

Fresh from her turn in the controversial drama Apple Tree Yard, in which she played a scientist who has a steamy affair with a stranger, with disastrous consequences, Emily Watson returns to the screen in a somewhat less racy but equally conflicted role this month, playing a scientist’s wife – Albert Einstein’s to be precise.

She was in Prague filming Genius, the ten-part drama about the Nobel Prize-winner, when Apple Tree Yard was broadcast here in January and February – much to her relief.

‘It was great making Apple Tree Yard but when I saw all the reaction online I did think, “Oh my God!”’ she laughs.

‘I was nervous about the sex at first, I knew some people would disapprove of a middle-aged woman having an exciting affair, but I’m glad I did it.

‘I was surprised it became such a big deal. It was watercooler-moment TV and I haven’t really done anything like that before.’

Shocking footage appears to show ‘Assad’s jets dropping illegal cluster bombs’ risking Trump’s wrath days after gas attack killed 89

DEADLY Russian-made cluster bombs have been dropped on towns in northern Syria just miles from last week’s chemical weapons attacks.

The attacks mean Bashar al-Assad is risking the wrath of Donald Trump after the US President recently launched air strikes to retaliate against the dictator’s sarin gas attack.

Several witnesses recorded footage of fires raging in Latamneh and Saraqeb on Sunday evening after the bombs rained down.

It also sparked fears that Russian bombers may have used white phosphorus for the first time, The Times reported.
