Child contracts strain of deadly meningococcal as WA cases continue to rise
Another child has been diagnosed with the deadly W strain of meningococcal disease in Western Australia, the third case in a week.
The child, who is aged under 10, is recovering in hospital.
It is the third diagnosed case of the life-threatening meningococcal W disease in the past week and the 11th so far this year, which the Health Department says is “well above the long-term average” of less than one W-strain case per year.
Those who have been in close contact with all three recent cases have been contacted by the department and provided with information, and in some cases antibiotics and a vaccine.
The new case comes after Albany teenager Lloyd Dunham died after contracting the W strain of meningococcal while holidaying in Tasmania.
Facts about meningococcal disease:
- It is not common, but it is potentially life-threatening.
- It can cause disabilities if not treated.
- It is caused by bacterial infection of the blood, or the membranes that line the spinal cord and brain.
- The bacteria is carried harmlessly in the back of the nose and throat by between 10 and 20 per cent of the population.
- Symptoms may include fever, chills, aches, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and confusion.
- While the majority of people fully recover, infection can progress quickly and about 5 per cent will die.
Meningococcal disease is on the rise again in WA after decreasing dramatically over time, from a peak of 86 cases in 2000, down to 16 in 2013.
But last year 23 cases were reported in WA, and there have been 19 so far in 2017.
The department said the increase was due to the emergence of new virulent strains of serogroup W, and to a lesser extent serogroup Y, meningococcal bacteria.

American Airlines plane bursts into a fireball during take-off in dramatic video
DRAMATIC footage has emerged showing the moment an American Airlines plane burst into a fireball during take-off.
The jet was taking off from an airport in Chicago when a piece of the plane’s mechanics blew apart and smashed through fuel lines, sparking the blaze.
An estimated 2,040 gallons of fuel gushed from the wing, engulfing the right side of the plane in flames.
The shocking incident happened in October last year, but the incredible new footage of the incident has now come to light after being shared by NBC.
Part of the clip, filmed from the control tower, shows the engine exploding in flames as the aircraft speeds up to take off.
Another part of the clip shows the perspective of the fire trucks as they speed up to douse the flames.
Terrified passengers jumped out of the plane, giving themselves a softer landing by falling onto luggage.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said at the time that the pilot aborted the takeoff of Flight 383 and evacuated all on-board…

Ed Sheeran’s ‘Game of Thrones’ cameo made them extremely angry
Spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7, episode one follow. So, ya know, don’t read if you haven’t watched. I was there. I rode with Ayra Stark, fresh from poisoning a whole room of terrible men, on her horse through the Westerosi woods.
And then she heard someone singing.
If you caught the season premiere of Game of Thrones Sunday night then you know that it was Ed Sheeran singing that song, sitting on a log, dressed in some Seven Kingdoms armor, like he totally belonged in this weird world of ice zombies, dragons, and wildfire. Except, he completely, 100 percent didn’t.
Ed Sheeran’s rando cameo last night was the worst thing that the show has ever done, pop culturally speaking.
For one idiotic useless scene, what was once a hand-crafted, surprising, and often-times painful show turned into a ham-fisted Ed Sheeran showcase his voice. It was insultingly distracting and the least subtle cameo I’ve seen on television since the Beach Boys just happened to show up on Full House.

Teenager woken by bear ‘crunching’ on his head
A 19-year-old who teaches children how to survive in the wilderness had his knowledge of the subject put to the ultimate test.
The 19-year-old had been working at a camp in Colorado and had been sleeping outside Glacier View Ranch, about 48 miles northwest of Denver.
He woke up at 4am on Sunday to a “crunching sound” and found the bear’s jaws digging into his head as the animal trying to drag him out of his sleeping bag.
The boy fought back, punching and hitting the animal as his colleagues woke up, realised what was happening and also tried to deter the bear.
Eventually, the animal gave up and walked away.
The boy, identified only as Dylan, was treated in hospital.

United Airlines at the centre of yet another customer abuse scandal
United Airlines has apologised to a passenger after it oversold a flight and forced a two-year-old boy to sit on his mother’s lap for more than three hours.
Shirley Yamauchi and her son were on the final leg of an 18-hour journey from Hawaii to Boston when a United Airlines stewardess told her the toddler’s seat had been given to a standby passenger.
Ms Yamuachi had purchased two tickets three months in advance. She paid $1000 per ticket.
“I told him that I bought both of these tickets and he tells me that he got the ticket on standby. Then he proceeds to sit in the centre,” Ms Yamauchi told Hawaii News Now.
“What happened to my son was unsafe, uncomfortable and unfair.
“I had to move my son onto my lap. He’s 25 pounds [11.3 kilograms]. He’s half my height. I was very uncomfortable. My hand, my left arm was smashed up against the wall. I lost feeling in my legs and left arm.”
Ms Yamuachi expressed her frustrations of the incident on Facebook, calling out the United Airlines employee who reportedly shrugged off her complaints.
The man who was given her son’s seat paid just $75.

Three attackers escaped van – London’s Finsbury Park Mosque. “They were white extremists”: WITNESS
WITNESSES say up to three ’attackers’ escaped after a van ’intentionally’ swerved into a crowd of pedestrians near London’s Finsbury Park Mosque.
London police say the incident has caused “a number of casualties”.
Eye witness Zakriya James, 24, said he believed there were four attackers in what appears to have been a rented white delivery van. Three got away.
The local said the van “ploughed” into people as they exited the mosque.
“The van just came through as people were walking towards where it was coming from,” he said.
“They didn’t realise what was going on at first. People just started running.
“As far as I know there were four white males and three got away.
“It probably is a retaliation. People were coming out of their prayer. That says something.”
Reports suggest up to 10 people have been hurt near a mosque at Finsbury Park just after midnight (9am AEST).
Up to 100 hundred people are gathered outside the cordoned off zone which is blocking the mosque, with tensions high after the incident.
A group of men huddled together to condemn the “terror attack” outside the mosque, where people had been engaging in Ramadan.
“This is a terror attack!” a man shouted.
One person has been arrested.
There is a massive police response on the scene with riot vans, armed personnel and a helicopter.
A man, who asked not to be named, said his uncle had been hit by the van.
“I have not heard from him but my friend told me he’d been hurt,” he told News Corp.
“The van just drove up and hit them out of nowhere.
“They didn’t see it coming.
“They knew there would be people there.
“They were white extremists.”

Malcolm Turnbull Says Donald Trump is Showing ‘Real Leadership’ OMG Chunder
The top praise comes after their face-to-face meeting in New York.
The U.S. President may be down near record lows in approval ratings, cop a daily drubbing in the media (his response: critics are ‘pathetic’) and have serious question marks hanging over many of his early decisions, but Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull insists Donald Trump is showing “real leadership”.
Turnbull touched on his recent, slightly delayed, meeting with Trump earlier this month on board the aircraft carrier, USS Intrepid, during a wide-ranging Monday morning interview with veteran Sydney broadcaster John Laws on 2SM.
Asked by Laws if Trump is a “capable of running what is the so-called most important country in the world,” Turnbull responded: “of course. Yes he is. Absolutely”.
“He is showing real leadership,” he said.
“Look at the way he has responded decisively to the chemical weapons attack in Syria and he has been engaging very constructively with China on a range of issues.”
Just last month, the Prime Minister revealed to News Corp he was learning a lot from President Trump, describing the businessman and reality show star as a “remarkable politician”.
The face-to-face meeting between the two leaders on May 4 was curtailed as Trump celebrated the House passing the Bill to overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system. But it eventually took place, as planned, on the Hudson River during 75th anniversary commemorations for the Battle of the Coral Sea.
“Lucy and I had a very good meeting with President Trump and Melania,” Turnbull told Laws. “They were so welcoming. It was very warm. As I said, it was more family than formal.”
“The president and obviously I had a very detailed private conversation, but it was a very warm occasion.”

Better Call Saul season 3 will be the first time we get to see Saul Goodman: Great Show… if U watched Breaking Bad
Better Call Saul has been toying with Jimmy’s moral compass and its level of tarnish in the first two seasons, but it seems in season 3 we will finally see him break bad in his own way. “Season 3 is the first time we get to see Saul Goodman,” Bob Odenkirk confirmed at Netflix’s annual ‘See What’s Next’ event in Berlin on Wednesday. “But not the way you think – so you get to see Saul Goodman, but he is not what you saw in Breaking Bad.” Bob had two more pieces of information about the new episodes he was allowed to share.

Donald Trump’s America will be even worse than you thought: Michael Moore

Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore has warned Americans that life under Donald Trump will be “worse” than they thought.
Insisting that the US President was “honestly” carrying out the agenda on which he campaigned, he urged voters to leave their “bubble”.
“Anybody who’s still in their bubble, thinking, you know, ‘It won’t be that bad,’ trust me, it will be as bad as that and worse,” he told CNN’s Don Lemon. “They’re just doing it because they’re honest.
Moore added that the Trump administration would reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server in her New York home while she was secretary of state, between 2009 to 2013.
The FBI closed its investigation the Democratic nominee shortly before the presidential election, only to reopen it less than two weeks before voters went to polls – a move which some commentators claimed caused irreparable damage to her campaign.
Two days before the vote, FBI director James Comey said investigation had come to the conclusion that no prosecutable offence committed.
Moore claimed that the Trump administration was “going to go after the Hillary server thing, starting next week, again.”
