TOYOTA has annihilated the lap record in taking pole position for the 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours sports car race.
Former F1 racer Kamui Kobayashi was at the wheel of the No. 7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid — which he will share with Mike Conway and Stephane Sarrazin — for its quickest lap, setting a pole time of 3m14.791s to undercut last year’s lap record by over two seconds.
At an average speed of almost 252km/h, the Japanese driver’s lap is the fastest ever around the iconic La Sarthe circuit, eclipsing the previous mark set in 1989 before chicanes were installed on the 6-km Hunaudières Straight.
The No. 8 Toyota completed a front-row lockout for the squad, Kazuki Nakajima qualifying the car he will share with Sebastien Buemi and Anthony Davidson 2.3 seconds shy of its sister.
The Japanese marque is still pursuing its maiden win in the legendary race, hoping to put to bed the nightmare of 2016 where it led the race until a heartbreaking mechanical failure with just three minutes remaining.
