Jobe Watson’s AFL career is coming to an end — the former Essendon skipper, who lost his Brownlow Medal over the supplements saga — announces his impending retirement after the 2017 season.
A two-time All Australian, Watson was one of 34 past and present Essendon players given a 12-month ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in January 2016 for an anti-doping rule violation, the use of banned substance thymosin beta-4.
Jobe’s career so far
- 217 games
- 112 goals
- All Australian 2012, 2013
- Essendon Best and Fairest 2009, 2010, 2012
“It’s time to retire and move on,” Watson said on Wednesday.
“I’ve had a wonderful time and experience from a child who spent my life around the football club and fulfilling a dream to play for the club and then to be the captain of the club.
“It’s been an incredible journey for myself and my family.”
Watson admitted the supplements saga had been the greatest challenge of his career, highlighting the emotional pain which came with the dark chapter of the Bombers’ history.
