Two whales frolic for the crowd at #Perth’s North Beach

A STAND-UP paddleboarder has had a close encounter with a pair of curious southern right whales just 200m off the coast near North Beach.

Photographer Stewart Allen, 53, of Ocean Reef, captured the moment on Friday afternoon as dozens of people stood along the cliffs between North Beach and Waterman to watch the whales frolic for more than two hours.

“The pair of whales I saw, which seemed to be a mother and calf, were in no rush and were lolling around and doing lots of fin-slapping,” Allen, who used a drone to photograph the whales, said.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said several southern right whales had been spotted along the metropolitan coast this week as they headed home to southern waters.

“They’ve been feeding in warmer waters off Geraldton and now they’re heading home,” she said.

“It is a bit late in the season for them to be here (off Perth) but it’s not uncommon.”

She said many of the female whales would be pregnant but were still offering comfort to their calves from last season.

She warned people to stay away from the whales and not approach them as the threatened species had special protection under the Wildlife Conservation Act.

She said the whales species had a reputation for being temperamental.

AFL: Jobe Watson. Former Essendon skipper to retire at season’s end

Jobe Watson’s AFL career is coming to an end — the former Essendon skipper, who lost his Brownlow Medal over the supplements saga — announces his impending retirement after the 2017 season.

A two-time All Australian, Watson was one of 34 past and present Essendon players given a 12-month ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in January 2016 for an anti-doping rule violation, the use of banned substance thymosin beta-4.

The Latest: California wildfire destroys 50 homes

MARIPOSA, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on the wildfires burning in the west (all times local):

7:30 p.m.

State fire officials say a huge wildfire in foothills west of Yosemite has now destroyed 50 homes and 49 other structures.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire protection confirmed the new destruction near the Gold Rush town of Mariposa late Thursday.

The blaze has also damaged 11 homes and five other structures.

It was not clear whether the homes were newly burned or just newly discovered as firefighters work on the blaze that started Sunday.

The fire’s size has not significantly changed, remaining at about 109 square miles (282 square kilometers) with 10 percent containment.

Thousands of firefighters battling a massive blaze encroaching on a small Gold Rush era town frequented by tourists on their way to Yosemite National Park have slowed its progress.

But the five-day blaze in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada is still threatening hundreds of homes, hotels and century-old saloons.

Fire officials say the fire is threatening about 1,500 homes and other buildings, after already destroying 45 structures in the outskirts of Mariposa.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Thursday it’s not clear what type of buildings burned in the wildfire that’s scorched 109 square miles (282 square kilometers) since Sunday.

Ash rained down and heavy smoke darkened the sky Thursday over the town of 2,000 people under a mandatory evacuation order.

Tour de France Michael Matthews in green, after Kittel pulls out

MICHAEL Matthews’ refusal to give up on his green dream has paid off in spectacular style, with the Australian taking the prestigious jersey in Stage 17 of the Tour de France.

The Australian is now all but certain to become only the third Australian to finish in green in Paris in four days’ time after a tumultuous day in the Alps.

Matthews was crowned the new points classification leader after Marcel Kittel crashed and was forced to abandon with an injured shoulder.

The German was caught in a multi-rider pileup only 20km into the mountainous 182km slog from La Mure and could not continue.

But while Matthews may be benefiting from the withdrawals of fast men Kittel, Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish, he has been the enduring performer in a war of attrition.

As rivals have fallen around him, the man they call “Bling” has ridden with panache and aggression.

Coming off two stage wins in three days, Matthews had cut Kittel’s lead to nine points when he claimed the intermediate sprint from the early breakaway before Kittel pulled out.

At the finish, Matthews closed his eyes and looked to the heavens on the podium. He now leads Andre Greipel by 160 points with four stages remaining…

AFL sex scandal: Revelations “Top 10” list complied about female colleagues

Reports this morning have raised the lid on a toxic sexist culture within AFL headquarters with revelations some men in the office had come up with a “Top 10” list of female colleagues they wanted to bed.

The Herald Sun reports a female employee was told that she was in fact on the list of a list put together by a number of male staff at AFL house.

The woman confirmed that she was told that she was “number five on the list.”

Despite these allegations, AFL CEO Gillon Mclachlan yesterday said the two sacked executives, Simon Lethlean and David Simkiss, would probably be welcomed back into the game in the near future…

Perth drunk driver caught twice in the same night. Déjà vu Some people never learn

A Perth man who attempted to drive drunk twice in the same night has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officers pulled over the 26-year-old over for speeding on North Lake Road in Cockburn Central at about 12:50am Sunday morning.

When the man was taken back to Cockburn Police Station he blew more than 0.08 and police issued him a notice of disqualification from driving.

The man left the station after he was released to walk to his home nearby.

Within the same hour police returned to patrolling the area and noticed the same vehicle driving south on the Midgegooroo Avenue.

Police pulled over the vehicle again and found the same man behind the wheel.

He was taken to Cockburn Police Station once more and tested positive for alcohol, showing only slightly less than he had the first time.

Authorities impounded his vehicle and another disqualification notice was issued.

A police spokesperson said the man would now appear in court as a result of the

US Doctor Nagarwala faces genital mutilation charges on girls

An American emergency room doctor faces charges of female genital mutilation on girls between the ages of six and eight.

Jumana Nagarwala, 44, of Northville, Michigan, is accused of carrying out the procedure for 12 years from a medical office in Livonia, Michigan.

Prosecutors said some of Nagarwala’s alleged victims came from outside the state and were warned not to talk about what had happened to them.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Blanco said the doctor was alleged to have performed “horrifying acts of brutality on the most vulnerable victims”.

He added: “The Department of Justice is committed to stopping female genital mutilation in this country, and will use the full power of the law to ensure that no girls suffer such physical and emotional abuse.”

Acting US Attorney Daniel Lemisch added: “The practice has no place in modern society and those who perform FGM on minors will be held accountable under federal law.”
