Ravensthorpe mine: Hundreds of jobs under threat as nickel mine closes

UPDATE: Premier Mark McGowan revealed he had called First Quantum’s chief executive last night to see “if there was anything the State could do, if there was any way of ensuring the mine stayed open”.

However, Mr McGowan said the consistently low nickel price and the unlikelihood of a rebound in the foreseeable future had left the company little choice but to shutter the Ravensthorpe mine.

He conceded the closure would have a devastating effect on the workers involved and the twin communities of Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun, and the State would provide “whatever support” it could.

Asked what this could mean, the Premier indicated the Government would provide counselling and retraining advice for affected employees, although he stopped short of flagging financial support…
