FBI raids former Trump campaign manager Manafort’s home

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – FBI agents seized documents and other materials from the suburban Virginia home of Paul Manafort, U.S. President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, during a predawn raid as part of a special counsel’s investigation into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

The raid, authorized by a search warrant, was conducted without advance warning on July 26, a day after Manafort met with staff members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, the Post said, citing unidentified people familiar with the probe.

Yes, you can blame climate change for extreme weather

In a new report, scientists show how climate change shaped several extreme weather events

In the midst of a stifling Washington, D.C. summer two years ago, former President Obama appeared in the White House to paint a grim picture of the challenge global warming posed to the country.

The August 2015 press conference, at which Obama announced the Clean Power Plan, was supposed to be held on the White House’s South Lawn, but it was moved indoors at the last moment, after officials decided it was too hot to do the event outside. Obama might have been tempted to reference D.C.’s heat wave in his remarks that day on global warming, but the President chose his words judiciously — careful not to overstep the scientific understanding of climate change and extreme weather. “While we can’t say any single weather event is entirely caused by climate change, we’ve seen stronger storms, deeper droughts, longer wildfire seasons,” he said.

For years, careful climate scientists — and the politicians like Obama who listened to them — have avoided saying that any particular event was directly caused by climate change, even as they called for urgent action to address the issue. But researchers now say they can use a variety of approaches to show that climate change is all but certainly causing and worsening extreme weather events…

Hail pelts #Perth on coldest day of year

PERTH is set to record its coldest day of the year as a cold front which swept across the city delivered hail to several suburbs.

At 3.20pm the maximum temperature recorded had been 14.2 degrees at 1.21pm. The previous coldest day of the year had come on Sunday July 2, when the temperature “maxed out” at 14.6.

Footage of hail had been captured by residents in Jane Brook, Lesmurdie, Kelmscott, Bassendean and Mandurah – where Meadow Springs, Falcon, Erskine, Dudley Park and Greenfields were all hit.

The Mandurah hail came during a lunchtime downpour where winds of nearly 70km/h crossed the coast.

Meanwhile, the heavy rain that started on Tuesday continued into today and resulted in more than 50mm of rain being recorded at the Perth metropolitan station over the two days.

Perth recorded more than 47mm of rain in the 24 hours until 9am today and has registered another 6mm since, with more to come from overnight showers.

The good news is that the worst of the front has now passed and better weather can be expected tomorrow and Friday. The bad new is that the winter conditions will return for the weekend and beyond.

Heavier falls will be back from Friday night and early Saturday morning, with showers during the day on Saturday and that will continue into Sunday.

Another cold front is set to move in for Monday.

Alice Springs police ‘run for their lives’ during mob attack

A mob of up to 20 people chase and attack two police officers near an Alice Springs town camp, leaving one officer in hospital.

Two police officers had to “run for their lives” and abandon a patrol car during a violent attack at an Alice Springs town camp on Tuesday night.

Police said the officers were responding to an alleged domestic violence incident at Larapinta Valley Town Camp at about 8:30pm when a group of up to 20 people attacked them.

A male officer was admitted to hospital for a knee injury while a female officer narrowly escaped injury when one attacker swung a wheel spanner at her head.

Alice Springs Acting Superintendent Scott Manley said the officers sought cover in a nearby building until support arrived.

“While attempting to take the woman into protective custody, it’s alleged that a group of intoxicated persons from nearby residences converged on them,” he said.

N Korea: Trump ‘hasn’t a clue where Guam is’ ‘clueless’ Trump will get them blown up

DONALD Trump is using Guam as a pawn in his stand-off with North Korea without even knowing where the US territory is, say terrified locals.

After the US President threatened “fire and fury” against the reclusive state, Kim Jong-un’s hermit kingdom revealed it is considering detailed plans to aim a missile at the Western Pacific island.

Residents of the 550 square-kilometre territory, home to several US military bases, turned on Mr Trump as they contemplated the dire warning from North Korea.

“We’ll be blown to smithereens!” wrote former teacher Eileen Benavente-Blas on a community Facebook page. “Trump hasn’t a clue where Guam is as he tweets our island into the nuclear hands of N. Korea.”

Donna Steele death: Cooktown on edge after mum’s shocking murder

THE small far north Queensland town of Cooktown has been overrun by rumour and innuendo and a single question — who killed loving mum-of-two Donna Steele?

It has been a week since the 42-year-old was last seen alive, and four days since her body, wrapped in material, was found in crocodile infested Isabella Creek about 12km from the home she shared with her husband and two small boys.

Her husband — who is not considered a suspect — was working away from Cooktown and returned home on Thursday to find her missing.

Heartbreakingly, her two boys, aged 8 and 10, came home from school on Wednesday and found their mum gone. They ate biscuits for dinner and put themselves to bed, and then got up and took themselves to school the next day.

Detective Inspector Geoff Marsh, who is leading the hunt for Ms Steele’s killer, said: “They’ve got themselves to school the next day, didn’t tell anyone at the school or any teacher what had happened.”

“You can only imagine” what the boys went through over that 24 hours “without their mother and not knowing what their future held for them,” he told media.

Ms Steele’s husband, a mechanic, raised the alarm on Thursday night and a desperate search began. It ended in tragedy when her body was found partly submerged in the creek close to the property of her close friends Rosyln Avard and Mark Sears. Both had been involved in the search for her.

The couple lived about 5km from where her body was found.

AFL: Jobe Watson. Former Essendon skipper to retire at season’s end

Jobe Watson’s AFL career is coming to an end — the former Essendon skipper, who lost his Brownlow Medal over the supplements saga — announces his impending retirement after the 2017 season.

A two-time All Australian, Watson was one of 34 past and present Essendon players given a 12-month ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in January 2016 for an anti-doping rule violation, the use of banned substance thymosin beta-4.

Jobe’s career so far

  • 217 games
  • 112 goals
  • All Australian 2012, 2013
  • Essendon Best and Fairest 2009, 2010, 2012

“It’s time to retire and move on,” Watson said on Wednesday.

“I’ve had a wonderful time and experience from a child who spent my life around the football club and fulfilling a dream to play for the club and then to be the captain of the club.

“It’s been an incredible journey for myself and my family.”

Watson admitted the supplements saga had been the greatest challenge of his career, highlighting the emotional pain which came with the dark chapter of the Bombers’ history.

Penny Wong’s stunning speech about the same-sex marriage plebiscite

You talk about unifying moments? It is not a unifying moment. It is exposing our children to that kind of hatred.

This motion is not about giving Australians a say. This motion is about weakness and division on that side of the Parliament. This motion is about a government so divided that they have to handball a hard decision to the community to make it because they can’t make it in their party room. That is what this is about. No amount of words can hide from the fact that this is one big massive handball, because this is a government without a leader, utterly divided on this issue. That is what this vote is about.

The reality is this is all a stunt and everybody knows that. Now, I have a lot of regard for Senator Mathias Cormann. He is generally a very decent person to deal with and he is trying valiantly to create some logic over what is an utterly ridiculous position. It is a stunt and an expensive stunt. There are a lot of things you could do with $120 million: GP visits, more teachers. I am sure we can go through a whole range of things that $122 million can be spent on far better than a vote that is not going to be binding.

We talk a lot about democracy and Australians having their say. But Eric Abetz is not going to change his vote if this is successful. Senator [Cory] Bernardi is not going to change his position. It is like one big opinion survey to get over the fact the Liberal party room can’t make a decision because they are so divided on the issue and because Malcolm Turnbull, regrettably, has not had the courage of his conviction. This is a vote whose sole aim is to stop the members of this Parliament being given a chance to do their job and vote. This is a vote because some in the Coalition can never countenance equality and they are never going to change their minds. They simply cannot countenance people like me and others being equal. Simple as that. They are not going to change their minds on this issue. If you just bring on a vote, we can save the country $120 million and frankly, put us all out of our misery of having to keep talking about this issue, because, frankly, the country has moved on.

New South Wales/Qld: Man Arrested After Alleged 17-Hour Abduction Of 22-Year-Old

Police are seeking to extradite him back to Queensland.

Police are seeking to extradite the 50-year-old man back to Queensland on Wednesday, where he will be charged with kidnapping, deprivation of liberty, assault and other charges.

It’s alleged that the man broke into the woman’s home on Cardiff Street in the Brisbane suburb of Darra at 8pm on Monday night and kidnapped her.

‘Shocked’ Irish vet denied visa after failing oral English test. To be sure, to be sure!

Dr Louise Kennedy has been refused a skilled migrant visa after not passing the English oral test despite being a native English speaker and holding multiple degrees.

Earlier this year the pregnant mother, who’s married to an Australian and lives on the Sunshine Coast, decided to apply for a skilled migrant visa.

The veterinarian profession is on the Australian Government’s skilled occupation list. There’s currently a shortage of equine vets, particularly in Queensland.

But she says to her shock, she did not gain enough points in the English oral test component to obtain her visa.

“It was such a shock,” she tells SBS World News. “It’s the only exam I’ve ever gone into not being nervous about.

“It’s taken about two-and-a-half years to get to this point because as a vet you’ve also got to prove your skills as a vet, so I’ve done all of that – that takes about two years – and then to not get it from English is just so frustrating.”

McDonald’s fire: Firefighters battle blaze at Melbourne restaurant

A FIRE is roaring out of a McDonald’s restaurant in Melbourne.

Diners were evacuated from the takeaway eatery in Braeside, in Melbourne’s southeast, about 8.30am this morning.

It is not yet known what caused the blaze as firefighters continue to battle it, but it appears flames are coming from the roof.

A petrol station next to the McDonald’s on the corner of Boundary Road and Centre Dandenong Road has been shut down.

A caller told 3AW the fire looked “substantial”.

“I couldn’t see any flames, but there are billows of smoke coming from the roof,” he said.

California Crops Rot During Farmworker Shortage: U.S. immigration policies

No one wants to do the harvesting.

US Vegetable prices may be going up soon, as a shortage of migrant workers is resulting in lost crops in California.

Farmers say they’re having trouble hiring enough people to work during harvest season, causing some crops to rot before they can be picked. Already, the situation has triggered losses of more than $13 million in two California counties alone, according to NBC News.

The ongoing battle about U.S. immigration policies is blamed for the shortage. The vast majority of California’s farm workers are foreign born, with many coming from Mexico. However, the PEW Research Center reports more Mexicans are leaving the U.S. than coming here.
