#F1 Hamilton in pit of despair as Vettel wins in Bahrain – As it HAPPENED Report

Lewis Hamilton pulled off the minor miracle of landing a speeding fine for going too slowly. The fastest man in the world was done for travelling at 35mph, a tardiness that cost him a shot at winning the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The triple world champion jammed on the anchors going into the pit lane, slashing 11mph off his speed in an instant. He was understandably deemed to have impeded Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and handed a five-second penalty – and two points on his licence.

He went on to lose the race by… 6.6sec. But he had slowed down in the last laps.

Vettel claimed his second win in just three races this season as he steered his way to victory in BahrainDespite the dejection, Hamilton manfully admitted as much: ‘The pit lane thing was my fault so apologies to the team for losing the time there.’

For all those recriminations, it was a day when Vettel and Ferrari were simply better than Hamilton and Mercedes. They were immaculate.
