Western Sydney Badgerys Creek airport ‘is going ahead’

Construction of Sydney’s second airport will begin by 2018 even if Sydney Airport Group does not take on the project, the federal government insists.

Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher said on Friday the airport would go ahead at Badgerys Creek even if the government had to step in and build it itself.

“Western Sydney airport is going ahead, regardless of who builds it,” Mr Fletcher told reporters in Sydney.

There is speculation Sydney Airport Group, which owns and operates the city’s international airport, will not meet the May 8 deadline to accept the Badgerys Creek project.

But the government had back-up plans, Mr Fletcher said on Friday.

“Our options are to build it ourselves, build it and operate it ourselves, or to identify another private sector party to build and operate the airport,” the minister said.

But Mr Fletcher remains hopeful Sydney Airport Group will accept the project before the deadline and take on the responsibility of building and operating it.

“The ball is entirely in Sydney Airport Group’s court,” Mr Fletcher told a Committee for Sydney event.
