Hundreds flee to safety: fire breaks out on the 27th floor of London tower block

Around 200 people fled to safety after a fire broke out on the 27th floor of an iconic London tower block last night.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at a flat in Grade II*-listed Trellick Tower in Kensal Town, north-west London.

A woman and two children escaped the flat before fire crews arrived, and there were no reports of any injuries at the scene.

The 31-storey high rise was designed in the Brutalist style by architect Erno Goldfinger after a commission from Greater London Council in 1966.

Its design is highly regarded by fans of modernist architecture, and has appeared in numerous films, TV programmes and music videos.

London Fire Brigade were called to the scene shortly before 9.30pm and took around 90 minutes to bring the fire under control.

In statement, the brigade said: ‘Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers tackled a flat blaze on Golborne Road in Kensal Town.
