Surfer saved from death by surfing legend Kelly Slater at Port Campbell

A young professional surfer has been rescued by fellow surfer Kelly Slater after he was dumped by a wave and held under the water for 45 seconds.

Russel Bierke, 19, who is a junior big wave pro surfer, was at Port Campbell in Victoria surfing with Slater and fellow pro surfers Ross Clarke-Jones, Tom Carroll and Ryan Hipwood on Wednesday, reported The Standard.

Bierke was knocked unconscious by his board and was underwater for about 45 seconds, swallowing a huge amount of seawater.

The waves were about 15 to 18 feet high at the two-mile break at the time.

‘(I’ve been told) I caught a wave and Hippo (surfer Ryan Hipwood) was in the channel and apparently just started screaming. Hippo could just see my board floating then and I think Hippo said another wave passed,’ Bierke said.
