30 fans are killed by electrocution while watching Manchester United play

More than 30 Nigerian football fans have died after being electrocuted while watching Manchester United play on Thursday night, it has been reported.

Nigerian media say the fans were killed while watching the Europa League game between United and Anderlecht in the city of Calabar.

United sent their condolences, tweeting: ‘Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria, yesterday.’

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the fans were watching the game together in a ‘viewing centre’. Further details as to how the tragedy occured are not yet known.

Ben Ayade, governor of Cross River state, of which Calabar is the capital city, said: ‘The incident marks a dark chapter in the life of the state where the precious lives of football lovers have been lost.
