#F1 Racing- Honda now at its pre-season performance target
While McLaren was expecting a big step forward in performance from Honda during the off-season, the new power unit proved to be both unreliable and uncompetitive when pre-season testing got underway at the end of February. Since then, a number of upgrades has allowed McLaren to regularly challenge for a place in Q3 and it scored points with both cars in Hungary (pictured).
While the Hungaroring places far less emphasis on power unit performance, a strong showing in Silverstone highlighted Honda’s progress, but Hasegawa told RACER it should have been at the current level from the start of the season…

#Perth winery owner guilty of raping worker
Chidlow’s Well owner Peter Raymond Costa, 57, went on trial in the District Court of WA this week, charged with three counts of sexual penetration without consent.
Costa, who only paid the woman in meals and lodging when she worked on his property in March 2015, was found guilty after about two-and-a-half hours of jury deliberations on Thursday and will be sentenced on September 11.
During the trial in the District Court, the jury was told the 57-year-old accused kept topping up the woman’s wine glass during dinner with another worker that night while his wife was away.
The woman admits she was so drunk she could only remember fragments of the rest of the night, but says she clearly recalled waking up in her bedroom with Costa on top of her.
She says she struggled and kicked Costa to try to throw him off, but the assault only ended when she called out to her colleague, who ran into the room and found them both semi-naked, and she was crying.
The man gave evidence via videolink from South Korea, testifying he heard her say “No, no, no. Help me” and then she called out his name.
But defence counsel David Rice said during closing submissions on Thursday that her distress “may simply have been second thoughts”.
Mr Rice also questioned whether the lighting was bright enough for the man to see what was happening.
“All he knows is she’s called out to him and appears to be in a distressed state,” Mr Rice said.
But prosecutor Ben Stanwix said the colleague’s evidence was compelling, as was the testimony of a South American friend who brought her husband to rescue the woman from the estate the next morning, and found her sobbing and shaken.
The jury has seen a string of texts sent by the woman to her friend asking for help and saying she’d been raped by her boss.
Mr Stanwix said she was credible witness, admitting peripheral details she couldn’t remember, and would not have made a false complaint as she was reserved and modest about sexual matters.

Armed police called to Heathrow over British Airways flight delay
People were left stranded when technical problems grounded the Boeing 747 due to fly from Heathrow to Las Vegas on Sunday. They thought they would be on their way the following day but a problem with their baggage meant the rescheduled flight was also held.
Cabin crew reportedly informed the cockpit that tensions were mounting and, after a lengthy wait, the passengers were taken off and armed Met police officers were called to meet the plane.
Jim Allison, who was on the plane, described the experience as “terrible”, saying he hoped never to have to deal with BA again. “Learn how to take care of customers and actually fly and we will talk,” he tweeted. Allison said he managed to make the journey at the third attempt, but only with the help of a rival airline…

FACTS ABOUT THE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE POSTAL BALLOT:
* Envelopes will be posted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics from September 12, with responses due by November 7 and a result announced on November 15.
* The electoral roll will close on August 24.
* Survey forms will include the question “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?” and voters will tick a “yes” or “no” box. Other marks on the form (such as a “1” in one box, or an “x” in one box) will be counted, so long as the preference of the voter is clear.
* Campaign material from political parties and other organisations will not need any authorisation details. That is, the source of the material need not be disclosed to voters because it is not being conducted under electoral laws.
* If people feel aggrieved by campaign material the following laws apply: Broadcasting Services Act (requires particulars where political material is broadcast on radio and television); Criminal Code (it is an offence to urge violence against groups or members of groups); civil and criminal penalties in state and territory laws; Telecommunications and Postal Services Act (offences against the use of telephone and postal services to menace or harass, or to use the services of Australia Post in such a way as to be regarded as offensive).
* The government has made it clear it wants campaigners to take part with courtesy and respect.
* Allowing only a single response per envelope will mitigate against problems with the papers being copied.
* If voters do not receive a ballot paper for whatever reason, or mess one up and require another, contact the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
* If political parties spend money on campaigning, or receive donations, the “usual rules” under the Electoral Act will apply.
* Ballot paper scrutineers for both sides of the argument will be able to be appointed by members of the House of Representatives and senators.
* There will be a call centre for defence personnel on deployment.
* Australians overseas, who are on the electoral roll, and have registered as an overseas voter and provided their overseas address, will receive all the necessary documentation to enable them to vote at their overseas address.
* The Australian Statistician will declare the final result. It won’t require a writ like an election.

Ravensthorpe mine: Hundreds of jobs under threat as nickel mine closes
UPDATE: Premier Mark McGowan revealed he had called First Quantum’s chief executive last night to see “if there was anything the State could do, if there was any way of ensuring the mine stayed open”.
However, Mr McGowan said the consistently low nickel price and the unlikelihood of a rebound in the foreseeable future had left the company little choice but to shutter the Ravensthorpe mine.
He conceded the closure would have a devastating effect on the workers involved and the twin communities of Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun, and the State would provide “whatever support” it could.
Asked what this could mean, the Premier indicated the Government would provide counselling and retraining advice for affected employees, although he stopped short of flagging financial support…

Wind River movie review: Taylor Sheridan’s directorial debut is more than another crime thriller
The Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Sicario and Hell or High Water has cut his teeth writing about honour-bound but compromised, taciturn men in pursuit of doing the right thing.
So it’s only fitting that Sheridan’s directorial debut revolves around another example of stoic masculinity.
Wind River, which he also penned, is ostensibly a tense crime thriller but it’s much more effective as a film about an unforgiving place and the people forced to contend with its natural brutality.
Corey Lambert (Jeremy Renner) is a wildlife officer, an expert tracker and marksman hunting big cats when he comes across the body of a young woman, the bright blue of her jacket stark against the white snow. She’s got no shoes or pants on and she’s miles away from any civilisation.
Because the body was found on the Wind River Native American reservation, the FBI sends a young agent, Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) to investigate. Jane, a Las Vegas-based agent originally from Florida, is not prepared for the blistering cold of this remote part of Wyoming.
Fully aware she’s unmatched for the elements and the isolated community, Jane recruits Corey to help her find the girl’s killer…

Victoria Police dance with swingers hours before shooting at Inflation nightclub
CCTV footage obtained by Fairfax Media shows the male officers appearing to enjoy the attention of at least four women dressed provocatively at the Saints and Sinners Ball on July 8.
At one point a woman “twerks” against a policeman, while his colleague embraces another female patron for more than a minute. Both men are armed and in police uniform.
The two officers make no attempt to rebuff the women during the 10-minute interlude near the club’s dance floor…
The video footage, which is expected to cause further embarrassment for Victoria Police, was taken at 1.17am – about 90 minutes before police received an anonymous triple zero call about a man armed with a gun at the function…

How a nuclear war in Korea could start and how it might end
March 2019. America and South Korea were conducting an annual large-scale military exercise, Foal Eagle, involving nearly 20,000 American troops and about 300,000 Korean counterparts. The drill was taking place against a backdrop of continuing missile tests by the North Koreans.
Over the previous two years, the regime of Kim Jong Un had successfully test-launched several intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The most recent was another two-stage rocket that analysts reckoned could reach any city in America. It carried what appeared to be a credible re-entry vehicle to shield its nuclear warhead as it plummeted through the Earth’s atmosphere towards its target and from which decoys could be fired to bamboozle missile defences…
…North Korea’s war was over. Mr Kim and most of his high command had been vaporised in their bunkers, his missile force and nearly all his artillery had disappeared. Despite the use of relatively low-yield weapons, military casualties were in the hundreds of thousands. Over a million people were trying to leave Pyongyang, the capital, in case of further attack. With order breaking down and food supplies getting scarce, China found itself facing a humanitarian catastrophe on its border. It claimed that lethal radioactive material was being blown into Chinese cities by disrupted weather.
Nobody knew how an appalled President Xi would respond. The shock sent stockmarkets across the world reeling, foreshadowing a global recession to come. Mr Trump, however, was undaunted. He tweeted: “Nuke attack on Seoul by evil Kim was BAD! Had no choice but to nuke him back. But thanks to my actions, America is safe again!”

Australian scientists make major breakthrough to reduce miscarriages, birth defects
A landmark Australian study has discovered Vitamin B3 can cure critical molecular deficiencies in pregnant women that cause miscarriages and birth defects.
The breakthrough made at Sydney’s Victor Chang Cardia Research Institute may spare scores of couples across the world the heartbreak of losing an unborn child and the challenges of raising a baby with a birth defect.
“The ramifications are likely to be huge. This has the potential to significantly reduce the number of miscarriages and birth defects around the world, and I do not use those words lightly,” lead researcher Professor Sally Dunwoodie said on Thursday.
Every year 7.9 million babies are born with a birth defect worldwide, while one in four Australian pregnant women suffers a miscarriage…

Aust has ‘contingencies’ for Nth Korea war, but he’s refused to say. LOL
The prime minister told reporters in Canberra the government is very alert to the unfolding situation, and it’s constantly under review.
“We obviously plan for all contingencies … but I’m not going to get into speculative territory,” he said on Thursday.
Mr Turnbull again urged Pyongyang to come to its senses and praised the latest tough sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop moved to reassure Australians the country wouldn’t automatically be drawn into any war between North Korea and the United States.
She’s also downplayed Donald Trump’s threatening words to North Korea, after the US president threatened Pyongyang with “fire and fury”.
Ms Bishop echoed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s claim the president was speaking in language that Kim Jong-un could understand, because clearly he didn’t understand diplomatic language.
“The United States is entitled to defend itself and its ally, but the strategy is to force North Korea, through diplomatic and economic means, to stop its illegal ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons programs,” she told the Nine Network on Thursday.
Ms Bishop says Australia has been in “constant discussion” with the US over the issue, but it wouldn’t necessarily be drawn into conflict should matters escalate that far.
“We were not a party, in the legal sense, to the (Korean War) armistice so there is no automatic trigger for Australia to be involved,” she told ABC radio.

Trump Evangelical Adviser: God Is Totally Cool With Nuking North Korea: Another Idiot Jerk
A right-wing pastor who serves on Donald Trump’s evangelical advisory board claims God has given the president “full power” to launch an attack on North Korea.
Robert Jeffress, head of the First Baptist Dallas megachurch, told CBN on Tuesday that a biblical passage in Romans allows rulers to use “whatever means necessary ― including war ― to stop evil.”
He said:
“In the case of North Korea, God has given Trump authority to take out Kim Jong Un. I’m heartened to see that our president ― contrary to what we’ve seen with past administrations who have taken, at best, a sheepish stance toward dictators and oppressors ― will not tolerate any threat against the American people.”

Arrested 8 crime figures + Border Force official charged in Sydney raids
Australian Border Force official Craig Richard Eakin has reportedly been nabbed over an alleged international tobacco ring operating between Sydney and Dubai.
It’s the third police operation this week following dawn raids on Tuesday when more than 570 AFP officers swooped on homes and businesses across Sydney.
The Australian Federal Police and NSW Joint Organised Crime Group said on Thursday eight people have been arrested in Sydney and one in Dubai over their involvement in an alleged conspiracy to illegally import drugs and tobacco into Australia.
Seventeen people were arrested across three countries, including two brothers of Kings Cross nightlife figure John Ibrahim, preventing about two tonnes of illicit drugs reaching Australia.
