Investigators have no idea what happened in the cockpit of a plane before five people were killed when it crashed at Essendon because there is no audio of the flight.
Four Americans on a golfing holiday and a Victorian pilot died when their small plane crashed into the nearby DFO soon after take-off from Essendon Airport on February 21.
Investigators know the pilot, Max Quartermain, radioed ‘Mayday’ seven times, but said he gave no further information to what was happening on board the plane.
Catastrophic engine failure was an early theory, but the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has ruled it out and the cause of the crash still remains a mystery.
