De Vito made the top three of the TV talent competition in 2003, alongside Shannon Noll and Guy Sebastian, but withdrew because of throat nodules.
Now 14 years later, she still bares the emotional scars that followed her time on the talent show and put her family under financial strain.
De Vito’s parents forked out $1.1 million for her debut album and funded her own record label when she was aged 26.
