Palmer United Party to be disbanded

THE Palmer United Party, which commanded more than 12 per cent of the vote in WA’s Senate by-election just three years ago, is to be disbanded.

Party creator and chairman, Clive Palmer, said Wednesday morning that he would seek to cancel the party’s registration with the Australian Electoral Commission.

Mr Palmer said he was also done with politics.

At its peak the party had three senators while Mr Palmer held a seat in the House of Representatives.

It struck an alliance with the Motoring Enthusiasts Party while PUP itself was instrumental in the repeal of the carbon tax and an attempt to water down financial advice laws.

It’s highpoint was the 2014 WA Senate re-run election where candidate Dio Wang collected more than 157,000 votes.

But at last year’s double dissolution election, Senator Wang’s support collapsed with the party collecting just 5000 votes.

Mr Palmer said PUP had become the nation’s fourth largest political party at the 2013 election …
