Sebastian Vettel claims Australian Grand Prix win

JONATHAN MCEVOY AT ALBERT PARK: The tyranny of Mercedes’ strength evaporated in sunny Melbourne with Ferrari’s Vettel ushering in a new era for the sport by claiming victory.

Hamilton was away like greased lightning from his grid, holding on to the advantage his pole position had afforded him. Vettel, starting second, was cleanly away into the first corner.

We sighed as that procession persisted through the early stages. Hamilton-Vettel-Bottas. There was little memorable overtaking action from start to finish. That is a sore we are sure to return to as the aftermath of the season-opening round is chewed over.

But back to the action. Hamilton, complaning about his grip, came in after 17 laps while leading by eight tenths of a second. The change of tyre was reasonably rather than exceptionally brisk, but any slight sluggishness in the pits was not race critical. What was race critical, as Hamilton’s engineer Peter Bonnington put it, was getting past the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, whom Hamilton had emerged behind after his reshodding.

‘How do you expect me to do that right now?,’ asked Hamilton. ‘There’s no way I can get past this guy.’
